Vehicle: 2022 Chevrolet Colorado Z71

Hi all,

I'm having a frustrating problem with my 2022 Chevrolet Colorado Z71, 3.6L V6, with only about 25,000 miles. This morning, I went to start it, and it just cranks but won't turn over. The 'Security' light on the dash is flashing rapidly while I'm trying to start it.

I tried a different key, but got the same result. The battery seems fine, as it cranks strongly, and all other electronics work. I haven't had any issues like this before.

Could this be a Passlock or immobilizer issue? What can I do to troubleshoot this before I have to tow it to the dealer? Any common fixes or things to check for a newer Chevy truck?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Your 2022 Chevrolet Colorado Z71's no-start condition with a rapidly flashing 'Security' light strongly indicates an issue with the vehicle's immobilizer system, often referred to as Passlock or Passkey on GM vehicles. This system is designed to prevent theft by disabling the engine if it doesn't recognize the key or if there's a fault within the security system itself.

Common Causes for Flashing Security Light & No-Start:

  1. Key/Transponder Issue: Although you tried a different key, both could potentially have issues, or the vehicle's reader isn't picking up the transponder signal.
  2. Immobilizer System Malfunction:
    • Faulty Passlock Sensor: The sensor that reads the key's transponder chip could be failing.
    • Wiring Issues: Damaged or corroded wiring to the immobilizer module or ignition cylinder.
    • Immobilizer Module Failure: The module itself could be faulty.
  3. Ignition Cylinder/Switch Issue: Problems with the ignition cylinder or the electrical switch portion can sometimes interfere with the Passlock system's ability to read the key.
  4. Low Battery Voltage (less likely given strong cranking): While your battery cranks strongly, sometimes marginal voltage can affect sensitive electronic modules like the immobilizer. However, strong cranking usually rules this out as the primary cause.
  5. ECM/BCM Communication Issue: The Engine Control Module (ECM) and Body Control Module (BCM) communicate regarding the immobilizer status. A communication breakdown can prevent starting.

Diagnostic Steps (Limited without specialized tools):

  1. Check for Other Dashboard Lights: Are there any other warning lights besides the security light? (e.g., Check Engine Light, battery light after cranking).
  2. Battery Load Test (Optional): Even if it cranks strongly, a weak battery can cause electronic glitches. A professional load test can confirm battery health.
  3. Attempt a Passlock Relearn Procedure (if applicable): Some GM vehicles have a manual relearn procedure that can sometimes resolve minor glitches. This typically involves leaving the key in the 'ON' position for 10-15 minutes, cycling the ignition, and repeating. Consult your owner's manual or a reliable online resource for the exact procedure for your 2022 Colorado, as incorrect steps can cause further issues.
  4. Inspect Ignition Cylinder Area: Look for any obvious damage or loose components around the ignition cylinder where the key is inserted.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: A no-start condition with a flashing security light almost always requires professional diagnosis. Continued attempts to start can sometimes exacerbate the issue.
  • For Code Retrieval: A dealership or an independent shop with advanced diagnostic tools can read specific immobilizer system codes (B-codes or U-codes) that a generic OBD-II scanner cannot.
  • For Component Replacement: If the issue is a faulty immobilizer sensor, module, or ignition switch, replacement and programming will be required by a qualified technician with specialized GM diagnostic equipment (like GM Tech2 or MDI).
  • For ECM/BCM Diagnosis: If the issue is a communication problem between modules, a professional will be needed to diagnose and potentially reprogram or replace modules.
