Vehicle: 2020 Chevrolet Equinox Premier

Hi all, I'm having persistent issues with the MyLink system in my 2020 Chevrolet Equinox Premier.

About once a week, the screen will either freeze completely, become unresponsive to touch, or just go totally black. Sometimes it reboots itself after a few minutes, but other times I have to turn the car off and on again. It's really annoying, especially when I'm using navigation or Bluetooth audio.

I've tried restarting the car, but it's a temporary fix. Is this a known software bug or something more serious with the head unit itself?

Infotainment system issues like freezing or a black screen are not uncommon across various vehicle manufacturers, including Chevrolet's MyLink system, especially in models like your 2020 Equinox. These problems can range from simple software glitches to hardware malfunctions.

Diagnostic Steps:

  1. Soft Reset: Try performing a soft reset of the infotainment system. On many GM vehicles, you can do this by pressing and holding the Home button (or the Mute button, depending on the specific head unit) for about 10-15 seconds until the system reboots.
  2. Check for Updates: Visit your Chevrolet dealer or check the MyChevrolet app/website to see if there are any available software updates for your MyLink system. Updates often address known bugs and improve stability.
  3. Inspect Fuses: Locate the fuse box (often under the hood or in the passenger footwell) and check the fuse specifically for the infotainment system. A loose or blown fuse, while less common for intermittent issues, can sometimes be a factor.

Common Causes:

  • Software Glitches: The most frequent cause. Bugs in the operating system or application software can lead to freezing or crashes.
  • Overheating: Prolonged use or high ambient temperatures can sometimes cause the head unit to overheat and temporarily shut down.
  • Corrupted Data: Issues with connected devices (e.g., faulty USB drive) or corrupted map data can sometimes trigger problems.
  • Hardware Malfunction: In some cases, the head unit itself may be failing, requiring repair or replacement.

When to See a Shop: If soft resets and software updates don't resolve the issue, or if the problem becomes more frequent and severe, it's advisable to take your Equinox to a Chevrolet dealership. They have specialized diagnostic tools to check for internal module errors, perform deeper software diagnostics, and determine if a hardware component (like the head unit or a related control module) needs to be replaced.
