Vehicle: 2020 Chevrolet Equinox Premier

I have a 2020 Chevrolet Equinox Premier, and lately, I've been hearing a really annoying clunking noise coming from the rear suspension. It happens most often when I go over speed bumps or uneven pavement. It's not constant, but it's definitely noticeable and getting worse.

It sounds like something is loose back there. I tried bouncing the rear of the car, but couldn't replicate it easily. Any ideas on what could be causing this? Is this a common issue with these Equinox models?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking noise from the rear suspension, especially over bumps, is a common complaint and usually points to worn or loose components. While it's hard to pinpoint without a direct inspection, there are several usual suspects for your 2020 Chevrolet Equinox.

Common Causes:

  • Sway Bar Links (Stabilizer Links): These small connecting rods often have ball joints or bushings that wear out, leading to a clunking sound as the suspension moves. This is a very frequent cause.
  • Sway Bar Bushings: The bushings that hold the sway bar to the vehicle's frame can wear down, allowing the bar to shift and clunk.
  • Worn Shocks/Struts: While more commonly associated with a bouncy ride, worn shock absorbers can sometimes produce a clunking sound if their internal components are failing or if their mounting bushings are deteriorated.
  • Control Arm Bushings: The bushings where the control arms attach to the frame or other suspension components can wear out, causing play and noise.
  • Loose Lug Nuts: Though less likely if it's clearly a suspension sound, always double-check your wheel lug nuts.

Diagnostics & Steps:

  1. Visual Inspection: Park on a level surface and visually inspect the rear suspension components. Look for any obvious signs of damage, rust, or torn rubber bushings.
  2. "Shake Down" Test: With the vehicle safely supported on jack stands (or on a lift), try to manually move each suspension component. Grab the sway bar, sway bar links, and even the wheel itself (at 12 and 6 o'clock, then 3 and 9 o'clock) to check for any excessive play or looseness. A helper can sometimes bounce the vehicle while you listen/feel for the source of the noise.
  3. Inspect Shock Mounts: Check the top and bottom mounting points of the rear shocks for looseness or wear.

When to See a Shop:

If you're uncomfortable inspecting these components yourself or can't identify the source of the noise, it's best to take your Equinox to a qualified mechanic. Worn suspension components can affect your vehicle's handling, stability, and tire wear over time. A professional can safely lift the vehicle, inspect all components thoroughly, and accurately diagnose and repair the issue.
