Vehicle: 2019 Chrysler 300S

My 2019 Chrysler 300S's Uconnect 8.4-inch screen keeps freezing up or just going completely black. It happens randomly, sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes for minutes, and it's incredibly frustrating.

When it happens, I lose access to navigation, radio, climate controls, and all other infotainment functions. I've tried restarting the car, and sometimes it helps, but often the problem returns shortly after.

Is there a known fix for this, or perhaps a recall that I'm unaware of? I rely on this system daily, and its unreliability is a major inconvenience. Any tips or shared solutions would be great.

Uconnect system issues, including freezing, black screens, and unresponsiveness, are fairly common across various Stellantis vehicles, including the Chrysler 300, especially in the 2015-2020 model years. These problems can range from minor software glitches to more significant hardware failures.

  1. Software Updates: The most common solution is ensuring your Uconnect system has the latest software update. Chrysler frequently releases updates to address bugs and improve system stability. You can often check for updates via the Uconnect system itself (if it's working) or by visiting the Mopar Uconnect website and entering your VIN.
  2. Hard Reset: A simple hard reset can sometimes resolve temporary glitches. While the car is running, press and hold the volume and tuner knobs simultaneously for about 10-20 seconds until the screen goes black and the Uconnect logo reappears.
  3. TSBs and Recalls: There have been several Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) related to Uconnect performance issues, including screen freezing and connectivity problems. It's worth checking with your local Chrysler dealership to see if any apply to your specific VIN.
  4. Hardware Failure: If software updates and resets don't resolve the issue, it could indicate a failing radio head unit or a related module. Components like the internal memory or processor can degrade over time.
  5. Wiring/Connections: Less commonly, a loose or corroded connection to the Uconnect unit could be the culprit, though this typically presents with more intermittent or complete failure.

When to See a Shop:

  • If software updates and the hard reset procedure do not resolve the issue.
  • If the screen remains black or completely unresponsive for extended periods.
  • If you suspect a hardware issue, as diagnosing and replacing the head unit requires specialized tools and programming.
