Vehicle: 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Touring L

Hey everyone,

I'm having some really frustrating issues with my 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Touring L. Lately, the transmission has been acting up, especially during low-speed driving and when shifting between gears. I've noticed a significant hesitation when accelerating from a stop, and sometimes it feels like it's 'hunting' for the right gear.

On top of that, I'm experiencing some pretty rough shifts, particularly from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. It's not smooth at all, and it makes the whole driving experience feel less refined than it should. The mileage is around 75,000, and I've kept up with all the scheduled maintenance.

Has anyone else with a 2017 Pacifica experienced similar transmission problems? Are there any known TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) or recalls related to the 9-speed automatic transmission in these vans? I'm trying to figure out if this is a common issue or something more serious that I need to address immediately.

Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated before I take it into the dealership. Thanks!

It sounds like you're describing common symptoms associated with the ZF 9HP 9-speed automatic transmission, which is used in your 2017 Chrysler Pacifica. These transmissions can sometimes exhibit hesitation, rough shifts, or 'gear hunting' due to various factors.

  1. Software Updates: Often, the primary cause is outdated transmission control module (TCM) software. Chrysler has released several software updates over the years to address shifting logic, improve shift quality, and optimize performance. A dealership can check for and apply the latest software calibration.
  2. Transmission Fluid Level/Quality: While less common on newer vehicles, an incorrect fluid level or degraded fluid can contribute to shifting issues. The ZF 9HP uses a specific fluid (Mopar ZF 8&9 Speed ATF) and requires a precise fill procedure.
  3. Valve Body Issues: The valve body controls hydraulic pressure to engage different gears. Malfunctions within the valve body, such as sticking solenoids, can lead to erratic shifting.
  4. Clutch Pack Wear: In some cases, internal clutch pack wear can cause slipping or harsh engagements, though this is typically seen at higher mileages or under severe use.

Relevant TSBs: There have been several TSBs related to the 9-speed transmission for various Chrysler models, including the Pacifica. For your 2017 Pacifica, a common TSB to inquire about is TSB 21-001-17 REV. A (or later revisions), which often addresses transmission shift quality improvements through software updates. Always ask your dealer to check for the latest applicable TSBs and software flashes for your specific VIN.

When to See a Shop: You should schedule an appointment with a Chrysler dealership or a reputable transmission specialist as soon as possible. Driving with significant transmission issues can potentially lead to further damage. They can perform diagnostic scans, which might reveal codes like P0730 (Incorrect Gear Ratio), P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction), or specific solenoid performance codes. A professional diagnosis is crucial to pinpoint the exact cause and recommend the correct repair. Early intervention can often prevent more costly repairs down the line.
