Vehicle: 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Touring L

My 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Touring L, with about 70,000 miles, has been having some really rough shifts lately, especially between 2nd and 3rd gear. It's not smooth at all, and sometimes it feels like it's hunting for the right gear.

Occasionally, after being in reverse, it hesitates significantly to engage drive. There's a noticeable delay and then a clunk. It feels like the transmission is struggling, and I'm worried about a major repair.

Is this a known issue for these 9-speed transmissions in the Pacifica? I've heard some chatter online but haven't found a definitive answer. Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Rough shifting and hesitation in the 9-speed automatic transmission (ZF 9HP) in 2017-2019 Chrysler Pacifica models are not uncommon concerns. This transmission has been subject to several software updates and TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) aimed at improving shift quality and overall performance.

  1. Software Updates: The most frequent solution involves updating the Transmission Control Module (TCM) software. These updates often address issues like harsh shifts, delayed engagement, and general drivability concerns. Ensure your vehicle has the latest software version by checking with a Chrysler dealership.
  2. Fluid Level and Condition: An incorrect transmission fluid level or degraded fluid can significantly impact shift quality. While these are 'sealed for life' transmissions, checking the fluid level and condition by a qualified technician is crucial, especially if there are no visible leaks.
  3. Solenoid Issues: Internal transmission solenoids can sometimes malfunction, leading to erratic shifting. Diagnostic trouble codes such as P0730 (Incorrect Gear Ratio) or P0740 (Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfunction) might indicate these issues.
  4. Valve Body Concerns: In some cases, issues within the transmission valve body can cause shifting problems. This is a more involved repair.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately if you experience the transmission going into limp mode, a check engine light illuminating, or if the vehicle becomes unsafe to drive.
  • As soon as possible if the symptoms are consistent and worsening. Continued operation with a struggling transmission can lead to more severe and costly damage.

Always get a professional diagnosis from a Chrysler-certified technician. They have the specialized tools and knowledge to accurately diagnose and repair these complex transmissions, including checking for applicable TSBs and performing necessary software flashes.
