2018 Pacifica Hesitates and Shifts Hard in Lower Gears - Transmission Problem?

Vehicle: 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Touring L

Hey everyone,

I'm experiencing some really frustrating issues with my 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Touring L. Lately, the transmission has been acting up, especially when I'm driving at lower speeds or trying to accelerate from a stop. It feels like there's a significant hesitation before it engages, and then it often shifts quite hard, almost like a jolt, particularly between 1st and 3rd gear.

Sometimes, it feels like it's struggling to find the right gear, and the RPMs will flare up a bit before it finally shifts. There hasn't been a check engine light yet, but the feeling is definitely getting worse and it's making city driving pretty unpleasant. I'm worried this could be a major transmission problem.

Has anyone else with a 2018 Pacifica, or even a similar model year, experienced anything like this? What was the cause, and what did you do to fix it? Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated before I take it into the dealership.

It sounds like you're describing a common set of symptoms associated with the 9-speed automatic transmission found in many Chrysler Pacifica models, including your 2018 Touring L. This transmission, while generally robust, can exhibit these behaviors due to several factors.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and what steps you can take:

  1. Transmission Software Updates: Often, rough shifting, hesitation, and gear hunting can be resolved with a software update. Manufacturers frequently release Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) to address known transmission quirks. A dealership can check if your vehicle has any outstanding software updates for the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or Transmission Control Module (TCM).
  2. Transmission Fluid Level and Quality: While less common on newer vehicles, an incorrect transmission fluid level (either too low or overfilled) or degraded fluid can contribute to shifting issues. This is a sealed unit, so checking it requires specific tools and knowledge, usually at a shop.
  3. Valve Body Issues: The valve body is the hydraulic control center of the transmission. If it's malfunctioning, it can lead to incorrect fluid pressure and erratic shifting. This is a more involved repair.
  4. Clutch Pack Wear or Solenoid Problems: Internal wear on clutch packs or issues with the solenoids that control fluid flow can also cause these symptoms. These are typically more serious and costly repairs.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: If a Check Engine Light illuminates, especially if accompanied by codes like P0731 (Incorrect Gear 1 Ratio), P0732 (Incorrect Gear 2 Ratio), or other P07xx series codes indicating transmission performance issues.
  • As soon as possible: Even without a light, if the symptoms are worsening, or if you notice any new noises, burning smells, or complete loss of a gear. Continuing to drive with a significant transmission issue can lead to more extensive and expensive damage.

Your first step should be to schedule an appointment with a Chrysler dealership or a reputable transmission specialist. They can perform a diagnostic scan, even without a Check Engine Light, to look for pending codes and check for any applicable software updates or TSBs related to your specific model year and transmission.
