Vehicle: 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Limited

Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice on my 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Limited. The passenger-side power sliding door has been acting up for a few weeks now. It's become really unreliable. Sometimes it opens halfway and then reverses, other times it won't open at all, or it struggles to close completely.

Manually operating the door seems fine, so I don't think it's physically stuck. It's just the power function that's failing. This is a huge inconvenience, especially with kids trying to get in and out. Has anyone else had similar issues with their Pacifica's power sliding doors? What was the fix?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Power sliding door malfunctions are a relatively common concern for minivan owners, and the Chrysler Pacifica is no exception. Given that manual operation is fine, it points to an issue with the power assist system rather than a mechanical obstruction.

Here are some common causes and what you can do:

  1. Check for Obstructions:

    • Even if you've checked, sometimes small debris (pebbles, dirt, ice) can accumulate in the door tracks or around the sensors. Thoroughly clean the entire track system and inspect for anything that might be impeding the door's movement or triggering the safety sensors.
  2. Inspect Safety Sensors:

    • The Pacifica's power doors have safety sensors (often rubber strips on the door edge) that detect obstructions and reverse the door. Ensure these sensors are clean, undamaged, and free from any kinks or breaks in their wiring. A faulty sensor can cause the door to reverse randomly.
  3. Wiring Harness Issues:

    • Over time, the wiring harness that runs to the sliding door can experience wear and tear, especially where it flexes. A broken or frayed wire can interrupt power or signal to the door motor or sensors. This is a common failure point.
  4. Door Latch or Motor Failure:

    • The door latch mechanism or the power door motor itself could be failing. If the motor is struggling or making unusual noises, it might be nearing the end of its life.
  5. When to See a Shop:

    • If cleaning and inspecting the tracks and sensors doesn't resolve the issue, or if you suspect a wiring, motor, or latch problem, it's best to have a professional technician diagnose it.
    • A dealership or a reputable independent shop specializing in electrical systems will have the tools to check for diagnostic codes related to the body control module (BCM) and door system, and pinpoint the exact component causing the malfunction. Early diagnosis can prevent further issues or safety concerns.
