2018 Pacifica Transmission Jerking and Hard Shifting - What's going on?

Vehicle: 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Touring L

Hey everyone,

I'm having some pretty frustrating issues with my 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Touring L. Lately, the transmission has been acting really strange. It often jerks hard when shifting, especially from 1st to 2nd gear, and sometimes when downshifting too. It feels like the car is slamming into gear, which is not only uncomfortable but also concerning.

This problem seems to be intermittent but is becoming more frequent. Sometimes it's smooth, and other times it's really rough. I've noticed it more when the car is cold, but it can happen after driving for a while too. I haven't seen any warning lights on the dash yet, but I'm worried about potential damage.

Has anyone else experienced hard shifting or jerking with their Pacifica, especially with the 9-speed automatic transmission? What could be causing this? Any advice on what I should check or look for before taking it into a shop? I'm hoping it's something minor I can address.

Thanks in advance for any help!

It sounds like you're dealing with a common complaint for some vehicles equipped with the ZF 9HP 9-speed automatic transmission, which is used in your 2018 Chrysler Pacifica. Hard shifting and jerking can be unsettling, but there are several potential causes and steps you can take.

Here are some steps and potential causes:

  1. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): Even if the check engine light isn't on, there might be pending or stored transmission-specific codes. A P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction) is a generic code indicating a problem, which would then be followed by more specific codes like P0731-P0736 (Incorrect Gear Ratio for specific gears) or P07XX codes related to solenoid performance.

  2. Transmission Fluid Level and Condition: Low or degraded transmission fluid can cause shifting issues. The 9-speed transmission is a sealed unit, but a qualified technician can check the fluid level and condition. Incorrect fluid type can also cause problems.

  3. Software Updates: Chrysler has released several software updates for the 9-speed transmission to address shifting irregularities and improve performance. An outdated Transmission Control Module (TCM) software could be a primary culprit. This is often the first thing a dealership will check.

  4. Valve Body or Solenoid Issues: The valve body is responsible for directing transmission fluid to engage different gears. Faulty solenoids within the valve body can lead to inconsistent fluid pressure and hard shifts. This requires professional diagnosis and repair.

  5. Adaptive Learning: The transmission's computer learns your driving style. Sometimes, resetting the adaptive learning values can help, especially after a battery disconnect or software update.

When to see a shop:

  • If you're unable to check for codes yourself or if codes are present.
  • If the issue persists after ensuring fluid levels are correct (if you're able to check).
  • If the problem worsens or becomes more frequent.
  • If you suspect a software update is needed, as this requires dealer-specific tools.

Given the complexity of modern transmissions, especially the 9-speed, it's highly recommended to have a qualified Chrysler technician diagnose the issue. They have the specialized diagnostic tools and knowledge to pinpoint the exact cause and apply any necessary software updates or repairs.
