Vehicle: 2020 Chrysler Pacifica Limited

Hey everyone,

I'm having a really frustrating issue with my 2020 Chrysler Pacifica Limited. The Uconnect touchscreen has started freezing up randomly, sometimes for a few seconds, and then occasionally it just goes completely black. It can happen while driving or even when I first start the car. It's not just the navigation; the radio controls, climate, and backup camera all become unresponsive.

I've tried doing a soft reset by holding down the volume and tune buttons, and that sometimes brings it back, but the problem always returns. It's really concerning, especially when the backup camera decides to go out while I'm trying to park. Has anyone else experienced this with their Pacifica? Could it be a software bug or something more serious with the module itself?

Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Intermittent Uconnect screen issues like freezing or going black are common concerns for many Chrysler owners. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps you can take:

  1. Perform a Hard Reset: While you've tried a soft reset, a hard reset can sometimes clear deeper glitches. Disconnect the negative terminal of your vehicle's 12V battery for 15-20 minutes. This fully drains residual power from modules, forcing a complete reboot. Ensure your vehicle is off and parked safely before attempting this.
  2. Check for Software Updates: Chrysler frequently releases software updates for the Uconnect system to address bugs and improve performance. You can often check for and install these updates via Wi-Fi directly through your Uconnect system settings, or by visiting a Chrysler dealership.
  3. Inspect Battery and Charging System: Low or fluctuating voltage can cause electronic modules to behave erratically. Ensure your vehicle's 12V battery is in good health and its terminals are clean and tight. A weak battery, even if it starts the car, might not provide stable voltage for all electronics.
  4. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): Even without a 'Check Engine' light, your vehicle's computer might store codes related to module communication or electrical faults. Using an OBD-II scanner, look for 'U' codes (e.g., U0140 - Lost Communication With Body Control Module, U0001 - CAN Bus Communication Bus A) which indicate network communication issues, or 'B' codes (e.g., B1500 - Display Control Module Fault) related to the infotainment system itself.

When to See a Shop:

  • If the issue persists after trying the above steps, especially after a hard reset and software update.
  • If you find persistent DTCs that point to a specific module failure or communication breakdown.
  • If the problem affects critical safety features like the backup camera consistently.
  • A dealership or qualified independent shop can perform more in-depth diagnostics, including checking wiring harnesses, power supply to the Uconnect module, and potentially replacing the head unit if it's determined to be faulty. They have specialized tools to flash firmware and diagnose internal module issues.
