Vehicle: 2019 Chrysler Pacifica Touring

Hey everyone,

I've been noticing a persistent clunking noise coming from the front end of my 2019 Chrysler Pacifica Touring. It's most noticeable when I go over speed bumps or uneven pavement, especially at lower speeds. It sounds like something is loose.

The ride quality also feels a bit rougher than it used to be. I'm worried it might be something serious with the suspension. Has anyone else experienced this with their Pacifica? What could be causing this, and is it something I can check myself before taking it to a shop?

Thanks for any advice!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking noise from the front suspension of your 2019 Chrysler Pacifica, especially over bumps, is a common complaint and usually indicates wear in specific suspension components. Addressing this promptly is important for both ride comfort and safety.

Here are the most common causes and steps you can take:

  1. Worn Sway Bar Links: These are a very common culprit. The links connect the sway bar to the control arm and can develop play in their ball joints, leading to a clunking sound. They are relatively inexpensive to replace.
  2. Bad Bushings: Control arm bushings or strut mount bushings can wear out over time, allowing metal-on-metal contact or excessive movement, resulting in noise.
  3. Loose or Worn Struts: While less common for just a clunk, worn struts can contribute to a rougher ride and, if severely worn, could allow for excessive movement that leads to noise. Check for fluid leaks around the strut body.
  4. Ball Joints: Lower or upper ball joints (if applicable) can wear out, causing clunking and potentially affecting steering stability.
  5. Tie Rod Ends: Inner or outer tie rod ends, if loose, can also cause clunking, particularly when turning or going over bumps.

When to see a shop:

  • Immediate Inspection: If the noise is loud, persistent, or accompanied by changes in steering feel (looseness, pulling), it's crucial to have it inspected by a professional mechanic as soon as possible. Worn suspension components can compromise vehicle control.
  • Diagnostic Check: A shop can lift the vehicle and perform a thorough inspection of all suspension components, including prying on parts to check for play. They can accurately diagnose the source of the clunking.
  • Alignment: After replacing any major suspension components, a wheel alignment is highly recommended to ensure proper steering and tire wear.
