Vehicle: 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Touring L

Hey everyone,

I'm experiencing some really frustrating issues with my 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Touring L. Lately, the transmission has been shifting very roughly, especially between 3rd and 4th gear, and sometimes it feels like it hesitates before engaging a gear. It's not consistent, but it's happening more frequently now.

I've heard some chatter about the 9-speed automatic transmission in these vans. Is this a common problem for the Pacifica? I'm worried about the long-term reliability.

Has anyone else dealt with this? Are there any known TSBs or recalls for transmission issues on the 2018 models? I'm trying to figure out if this is something I should be seriously concerned about or if it's a minor adjustment. Any advice on what to look for or ask my mechanic would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It sounds like you're describing a common concern with the ZF-designed 9-speed automatic transmission (948TE) found in many Chrysler vehicles, including your 2018 Pacifica.

  1. Common Causes:

    • Software Updates: Often, rough shifting or hesitation can be resolved with a transmission control module (TCM) software update. Early versions of the software had known issues that affected shift quality. This is usually the first thing a dealership will check.
    • Adaptive Learning: The transmission has an adaptive learning process. Sometimes, erratic driving styles or battery disconnections can cause it to "forget" its optimal shift points, leading to rougher shifts. A transmission relearn procedure might be necessary.
    • Transmission Fluid Issues: Incorrect fluid levels or degraded fluid quality can impact shifting. The 948TE requires a specific Mopar ATF+4 fluid.
    • Valve Body or Solenoid Issues: In more severe cases, internal components like the valve body or shift solenoids can fail, leading to specific gear engagement problems.
    • Clutch Pack Wear: While less common in newer vehicles, excessive wear on clutch packs can also cause hesitation or slipping.
  2. Relevant TSBs/Recalls:

    • There have been several Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) related to the 9-speed transmission for various Chrysler models, including the Pacifica, addressing shift quality and software updates. It's crucial to have your VIN checked at a Chrysler dealership to see if your specific vehicle is eligible for any outstanding TSBs or recalls related to the transmission.
    • While not a recall, TSBs like TSB 21-001-18 REV. A (for some 2017-2018 models) addressed transmission shift quality improvements through software updates.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • You should schedule an appointment with a qualified Chrysler service center or a reputable transmission specialist as soon as possible.
    • If a Check Engine Light (CEL) illuminates, have the vehicle scanned for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Common codes related to transmission issues might include:
      • P0734: Incorrect Gear Ratio 4th
      • P0735: Incorrect Gear Ratio 5th
      • P0729 - P0736: Incorrect Gear Ratio for various gears
      • P0700: Transmission Control System Malfunction (often a general code indicating a more specific transmission fault)
    • Early diagnosis can prevent more extensive and costly repairs. Do not ignore persistent rough shifting or hesitation, as it could indicate a worsening internal problem.
