Vehicle: 2020 Chrysler Pacifica Touring L

Hey everyone,

I've been experiencing some really rough shifting lately in my 2020 Chrysler Pacifica Touring L. It's got the 3.6L V6 engine and the 9-speed automatic transmission. The car has about 65,000 miles on it.

Specifically, I notice it most when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear, and sometimes when downshifting at lower speeds. There's a noticeable jerk or hesitation, and it doesn't feel smooth at all. It's almost like the transmission is struggling to find the right gear.

I haven't seen any check engine lights come on yet, but the feeling is definitely getting worse. I'm worried this could be a sign of a bigger problem. Has anyone else with a similar Pacifica experienced this? What could be causing this issue?

Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated before I take it into the dealership.

It sounds like you're describing a common concern with the 9-speed automatic transmission (ZF 9HP) found in many Chrysler Pacifica models, especially as they accumulate mileage. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and what to do:

  1. Transmission Software Updates:

    • Cause: Often, rough shifting or hesitation can be resolved with a transmission control module (TCM) software update. Manufacturers frequently release updates to refine shift logic, improve performance, and address known issues. Your 2020 Pacifica might be due for one.
    • Action: This is usually the first thing a dealership will check. It's a relatively quick and inexpensive fix if it resolves the problem.
  2. Transmission Fluid Condition and Level:

    • Cause: While the 9-speed transmission is often considered 'sealed for life,' fluid degradation or an incorrect fluid level can lead to poor shifting. Contaminated or low fluid can prevent proper hydraulic pressure for smooth gear changes.
    • Action: Have a qualified technician inspect the transmission fluid level and condition. Even if it's not due for a full flush, a top-off or fluid analysis might be necessary.
  3. Solenoid Issues:

    • Cause: The transmission uses solenoids to control fluid flow and engage gears. A failing or sticking solenoid can cause erratic shifting, hesitation, or even prevent a gear from engaging properly. While you don't have a CEL, a pending code (e.g., P0700 - Transmission Control System Malfunction, or specific gear ratio error codes like P0731-P0736) might be present.
    • Action: A diagnostic scan with a professional tool can often pinpoint solenoid issues before a full CEL illuminates.
  4. Torque Converter or Internal Component Wear:

    • Cause: Less commonly, but still possible, internal wear within the transmission or a failing torque converter could be the culprit. This typically presents with more severe symptoms, including shuddering, slipping, or a complete loss of drive.
    • Action: This is a more extensive repair and usually a last resort after other possibilities are ruled out.

When to See a Shop:

Given that the issue is getting worse, it's highly recommended to schedule an appointment with a Chrysler dealership or a reputable independent transmission specialist as soon as possible. Even without a check engine light, a professional diagnostic scan can often reveal pending fault codes or abnormal transmission parameters that indicate a problem. Addressing this early can prevent more significant and costly damage down the road.
