Spongy Brake Pedal on 2020 Pacifica - Longer Stopping Distances

Vehicle: 2020 Chrysler Pacifica Limited

Hey everyone, I'm experiencing a really concerning issue with my 2020 Chrysler Pacifica Limited. The brake pedal feels much softer than it used to, and I have to push it down further to get the car to stop. It also feels like my stopping distances are longer, which is pretty scary, especially with kids in the car.

There are no warning lights on the dash, like the ABS or brake light. I checked the brake fluid reservoir, and it looks to be at the correct level. The van has about 45,000 miles. Any ideas what might be causing this?

  1. Common Causes: A spongy brake pedal and increased stopping distances on your 2020 Chrysler Pacifica are serious symptoms that require immediate attention. Potential causes include:
    • Air in the Brake Lines: This is the most common reason for a spongy pedal. Air is compressible, unlike brake fluid, leading to a soft feel. This can happen after brake work or if fluid levels drop too low.
    • Failing Master Cylinder: The master cylinder generates hydraulic pressure. If its internal seals are leaking, pressure won't build effectively, resulting in a soft pedal that might sink slowly to the floor.
    • Worn Brake Hoses: Old or damaged rubber brake hoses can expand under pressure, reducing the force applied to the calipers and causing a soft pedal.
    • Brake Fluid Contamination or Degradation: Over time, brake fluid can absorb moisture, lowering its boiling point and effectiveness.
    • Faulty ABS Modulator: While less common without an ABS light, a malfunctioning ABS modulator can sometimes affect pedal feel.
  2. Diagnostics:
    • Visual Inspection: Check all brake lines and calipers for leaks. Look for fluid around the master cylinder.
    • Brake Bleeding: If air is suspected, a thorough brake system bleed is necessary.
    • OBD-II Scan: Although no dash lights are on, a professional scan tool might reveal pending or historic ABS/brake system codes, such as C0020 (ABS Pump Motor Control) or C0040 (Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor) if there's an intermittent issue affecting hydraulic pressure.
  3. When to See a Shop: Do not delay in getting your Pacifica inspected by a qualified mechanic. Compromised braking is a severe safety hazard. Driving with a spongy pedal can lead to accidents. A professional can accurately diagnose the issue, whether it's air in the lines, a failing master cylinder, or another component, and perform the necessary repairs safely.
