Vehicle: 2021 Chrysler Voyager LX

Hi everyone, I've got a problem with my 2021 Chrysler Voyager LX. Both the ABS light and the Traction Control light came on the dashboard yesterday and haven't gone off. I also feel like the brakes are acting a little weird sometimes, almost like the ABS is engaging when it shouldn't, even on dry pavement.

The van has about 30,000 miles. I haven't hit any major potholes or anything recently. What could be causing both these lights to come on at the same time? Is it safe to drive?

  1. Common Causes: When both the ABS and Traction Control (TCS) lights illuminate simultaneously on your 2021 Chrysler Voyager LX, it almost always indicates a fault within the Anti-lock Braking System. Since TCS relies on ABS wheel speed sensor data, a problem with one usually affects the other. Common causes include:
    • Faulty Wheel Speed Sensor: This is the most frequent culprit. A damaged, dirty, or malfunctioning wheel speed sensor (also known as an ABS sensor) sends incorrect data to the ABS control module, triggering both lights.
    • Damaged ABS Wiring/Connector: The wiring leading to a wheel speed sensor can become frayed or corroded.
    • ABS Control Module Failure: While less common, the ABS control module itself can fail.
    • Low Brake Fluid: Extremely low brake fluid can sometimes trigger brake-related warnings, but usually, a specific brake warning light would also be on.
    • Tone Ring Damage: The magnetic or toothed ring that the wheel speed sensor reads can become damaged or obstructed.
  2. Diagnostics:
    • OBD-II Scan: This is crucial. A standard OBD-II scanner might not read ABS codes, but a more advanced scanner or a dealership tool will pull specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the ABS module. Look for codes like:
      • C0031: Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit
      • C0034: Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit
      • C0037: Left Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit
      • C003A: Right Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit
      • C0040: Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor (often related to general sensor issues)
      • C0020: ABS Pump Motor Control (less likely if only sensor issues are present)
    • Visual Inspection: Check each wheel speed sensor and its wiring for visible damage, dirt, or corrosion.
  3. When to See a Shop: It is generally not safe to drive extensively with both ABS and Traction Control lights on, especially if you feel the brakes are behaving erratically. While your regular hydraulic brakes should still function, the ABS and TCS systems are disabled. This means you lose the ability to prevent wheel lock-up during hard braking and wheel spin during acceleration, which can be dangerous in emergency situations or on slippery roads. Have your Voyager diagnosed and repaired by a professional mechanic as soon as possible. They can accurately read the ABS codes, pinpoint the faulty component, and ensure your braking system is fully functional.
