Vehicle: 2018 Dodge Challenger R/T

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2018 Dodge Challenger R/T with about 55,000 miles on it now. I've been pretty good about oil changes and other basic maintenance, but I realized I haven't even thought about the differential fluid.

Is this something that needs to be changed? If so, what's the recommended interval for a car like mine? I do a mix of highway and city driving, no track days or anything crazy.

Also, is this a DIY job for someone with moderate mechanical skills, or is it better left to a professional shop? If it's DIY, any specific fluid recommendations or tips would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Maintaining your differential fluid is crucial for the longevity and smooth operation of your 2018 Dodge Challenger R/T's drivetrain. The differential allows your wheels to spin at different speeds when turning, and the fluid lubricates the gears within it.

Recommended Interval & Importance:

  1. Interval: For most normal driving conditions, Dodge typically recommends checking and potentially changing the rear differential fluid every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, or every 2-3 years, whichever comes first. Given your 55,000 miles, it's definitely time to address it. If you were doing heavy towing, racing, or frequent aggressive driving, the interval would be shorter.
  2. Why it's important: Over time, the differential fluid breaks down from heat and friction, losing its lubricating properties. It can also become contaminated with metal particles from normal gear wear. Old, degraded fluid can lead to increased wear, noise (like a whining sound from the rear), and eventually costly differential failure.

DIY vs. Shop:

Changing differential fluid is a moderately challenging DIY task. It requires specific tools and a comfortable working space. If you're comfortable working under your car, have the right tools, and can safely lift and support the vehicle, it's definitely doable.

DIY Steps & Fluid Recommendations (General Guide):

  1. Gather Supplies: You'll need a drain pan, a torque wrench, a fluid pump (essential for refilling), a 3/8" drive ratchet or wrench for the drain/fill plugs, and shop rags.
  2. Fluid Type: For your 2018 Challenger R/T, you'll likely need a synthetic 75W-90 gear oil. Always check your owner's manual for the exact specification and capacity. Many Challengers with limited-slip differentials also require a friction modifier additive, or a fluid that already contains it. Mopar, Royal Purple, and Red Line are popular choices.
  3. Lift & Secure: Safely lift your vehicle on a level surface using jack stands. Ensure it's stable.
  4. Locate Plugs: The differential has a drain plug at the bottom and a fill plug usually on the side.
  5. Drain: Place your drain pan underneath, remove the drain plug, and allow the old fluid to completely drain.
  6. Clean & Replace: Clean the drain plug and replace it, torquing it to the manufacturer's specifications.
  7. Fill: Using your fluid pump, slowly pump new gear oil into the fill hole until it just starts to seep out.
  8. Replace Fill Plug: Reinstall the fill plug, torquing it to spec.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you hear any unusual noises (whining, clunking) coming from the rear end.
  • If you're not comfortable working under the car or don't have the proper tools.
  • If you're unsure about the correct fluid type or capacity for your specific trim and differential type (e.g., open vs. limited-slip).
  • If the drain plug is seized or stripped, requiring specialized tools for removal.
