Vehicle: 2018 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack

Hey everyone,

I'm having some weird issues with my 2018 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack. Lately, the transmission feels like it's hesitating, especially when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, and sometimes from 2nd to 3rd. It's not always smooth; sometimes it feels like a slight jolt or delay before it engages properly.

It's got the 8-speed automatic, and I've noticed it more in stop-and-go traffic. No warning lights on the dash yet, but it's definitely not how it used to feel. The car has about 60,000 miles on it.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Challenger? Wondering if it's a common issue or something I should be really concerned about. Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you're experiencing some common symptoms of transmission issues in your 2018 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack. While the 8-speed automatic (ZF 8HP) is generally robust, certain factors can lead to the hesitation and rough shifting you describe.

Here are potential causes and steps to consider:

  1. Low or Contaminated Transmission Fluid:

    • Cause: Over time, transmission fluid can degrade or levels can drop due to minor leaks. Low or dirty fluid can lead to increased friction, overheating, and poor hydraulic pressure, affecting shift quality.
    • Action: Check your transmission fluid level and condition. If it's dark, smells burnt, or is low, a fluid and filter change might be necessary. Note that checking ZF 8HP fluid often requires specific procedures and tools.
  2. Transmission Software/Adaptive Learning Issues:

    • Cause: The transmission control module (TCM) uses adaptive learning to adjust shift points based on driving style. Sometimes, this learning can get 'confused' or a software glitch can occur, leading to erratic shifting.
    • Action: A dealership or qualified independent shop can check for available software updates for your TCM. They can also perform a 'quick learn' procedure or reset adaptive values, which can sometimes resolve minor shift anomalies.
  3. Valve Body or Solenoid Problems:

    • Cause: The valve body directs fluid pressure to engage clutches and bands. Solenoids within the valve body control these fluid pathways. A faulty solenoid or a worn valve body can cause delayed or harsh shifts.
    • Action: This is a more complex diagnosis requiring professional equipment. If fluid and software checks don't resolve the issue, a transmission specialist would need to inspect these components.
  4. Torque Converter Issues:

    • Cause: While less common for just rough shifts, a failing torque converter can sometimes contribute to hesitation or shuddering, especially during engagement.
    • Action: Typically diagnosed by a transmission specialist.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: If a Check Engine Light (CEL) illuminates, or if you notice any new warning lights related to the transmission. Common OBD-II codes related to transmission issues include P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction), P07xx series (specific solenoid or sensor issues), or P17xx series (manufacturer-specific transmission codes).
  • Soon: If the problem worsens, becomes more frequent, or if you start hearing unusual noises (whining, clunking) from the transmission.
  • For Diagnosis: Given the complexity of modern automatic transmissions, it's highly recommended to have a qualified Dodge dealership or an independent transmission specialist diagnose the issue. They have the specific diagnostic tools and expertise to accurately pinpoint the cause and recommend the correct repair. Ignoring transmission problems can lead to more severe and costly damage down the line.
