Vehicle: 2020 Dodge Challenger R/T

Hey guys, I'm having some serious transmission issues with my 2020 Dodge Challenger R/T. It's got the 8-speed automatic. Lately, it's been shifting really hard, especially between 2nd and 3rd gear, and sometimes from 3rd to 4th. It feels like a jolt.

A few times, it's gone into what seems like limp mode, where it won't shift past a certain gear, and acceleration is really limited. No check engine light has come on, which is weird. I've tried restarting the car, and it sometimes clears up for a bit, but then it comes back. What could be causing this without a CEL?

ClearTheCode admin answer: Hard shifting and limp mode on your 2020 Dodge Challenger R/T, even without a Check Engine Light, points towards an issue with the transmission control system. Modern transmissions are highly electronic, and several things can cause this behavior:

  1. Transmission Fluid Level and Condition:

    • Low Fluid: An often overlooked cause. Check your transmission fluid level according to your owner's manual (usually requires the engine to be at operating temperature). Low fluid can cause erratic shifting.
    • Contaminated/Old Fluid: While less likely on a 2020 model unless it has very high mileage or severe use, old or burnt fluid can affect performance.
  2. Transmission Control Module (TCM) Issues: The TCM might be experiencing glitches or internal faults. Sometimes a software update from the dealer can resolve known issues.

  3. Valve Body Solenoids: The valve body contains solenoids that direct fluid flow for gear changes. A sticking or failing solenoid can lead to harsh shifts or prevent proper gear engagement.

  4. Speed Sensors: Input or output speed sensors within the transmission can send incorrect data to the TCM, leading to incorrect shift points or limp mode. While this often triggers a CEL, it's not always immediate.

  5. Wiring or Connector Problems: Loose or corroded electrical connectors to the transmission or TCM can cause intermittent communication issues, leading to unpredictable behavior.

When to See a Shop: Given the severity of hard shifting and limp mode, it's highly recommended to have your Challenger inspected by a professional mechanic specializing in transmissions or a Dodge dealership. Even without a CEL, a professional scan tool can often read 'pending' or 'history' codes from the TCM that a generic OBD-II scanner might miss. Continuing to drive with these symptoms can cause further damage to the transmission, leading to more costly repairs.
