Vehicle: 2021 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack

I'm having a major headache with my 2021 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack. For the past few weeks, I've noticed a sweet smell of coolant, and the coolant reservoir level keeps dropping. Yesterday, the temperature gauge started creeping up, and I even saw a 'High Engine Temp' warning on the dash before I pulled over. I can see a small puddle forming under the front of the car after it sits for a while, and it looks like coolant.

The car has only about 30,000 miles on it, which seems way too early for a major coolant leak. I haven't noticed any steam from the engine bay while driving, but the smell is definitely there. Could this be a water pump issue, or maybe a hose? I'm concerned about driving it now.

Has anyone with a newer Scat Pack experienced this? What should I be looking for, and how serious is this? Any advice would be appreciated!

A coolant leak and overheating in a relatively new 2021 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack with only 30,000 miles is definitely a serious concern that requires immediate attention. Overheating can lead to catastrophic engine damage, including warped cylinder heads or a blown head gasket. The sweet smell and visible puddle are clear indicators of an active leak.

Here are the most common causes for coolant leaks and overheating in your vehicle:

  1. Water Pump Failure: This is a very common point of failure, even on newer vehicles. The seals or bearings in the water pump can fail, leading to leaks. You might see coolant dripping from the front of the engine, often near the accessory belt area.
    • Diagnostics: A visual inspection for coolant stains around the pump housing and pulley, and sometimes a pressure test of the cooling system, can confirm this.
  2. Hose Leaks: While less common on a newer vehicle, a damaged or improperly clamped radiator hose, heater hose, or bypass hose can develop a leak. Look for wet spots or crusty coolant residue around hose connections.
  3. Radiator Leak: The radiator itself can develop leaks, especially if it's been exposed to road debris. Inspect the radiator fins and tanks for any signs of wetness or damage.
  4. Thermostat Housing/Gasket: The housing where the thermostat is located can sometimes crack or its gasket can fail, leading to leaks. This often manifests as a leak on the side of the engine block.
  5. Reservoir or Cap Issues: Less likely for a significant leak, but a cracked coolant reservoir or a faulty pressure cap can lead to coolant loss and inefficient cooling.

When to See a Shop: Do not drive your 2021 Challenger Scat Pack if it's overheating or actively leaking coolant. Continued driving can cause severe and irreversible engine damage. You should have the vehicle towed to a reputable mechanic or Dodge dealership immediately. They will perform:

  • Cooling System Pressure Test: This is the most effective way to pinpoint the exact location of a leak.
  • Visual Inspection: A thorough check of all hoses, connections, the water pump, and radiator.
  • Diagnostic Scan: To check for any stored codes like P0128 (Thermostat Rationality) or P0117/P0118 (Engine Coolant Temp Sensor issues) that might indicate related problems. Early diagnosis and repair are crucial to prevent further damage to your high-performance engine.
