Vehicle: 2017 Dodge Charger R/T

Hello Dodge forum,

My 2017 Dodge Charger R/T, equipped with the 5.7L Hemi, suddenly went into limp mode yesterday. The check engine light is on, and the car feels like it's stuck in a low gear, maybe 1st or 2nd. It's really struggling to accelerate.

I pulled the codes with my scanner, and I'm getting P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction) and P0731 (Gear 1 Incorrect Ratio). This is pretty concerning. I haven't noticed any strange noises or leaks before this.

Has anyone experienced these specific codes on their Charger? What should I be looking at first? Transmission fluid level, solenoids, or something more serious?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The P0700 code is a generic indicator that the Transmission Control Module (TCM) has detected a fault and stored a more specific code within its memory. The P0731, Gear 1 Incorrect Ratio, is the specific code that points to the actual problem.

Here's a breakdown of what to check and potential causes:

  1. Check Transmission Fluid Level and Condition:

    • This is the first and easiest step. Ensure the transmission fluid is at the correct level (check according to your owner's manual, typically with the engine warm and running in Park or Neutral). Also, note the fluid's color and smell. Burnt-smelling or dark, sludgy fluid indicates significant internal wear.
  2. Inspect for External Leaks:

    • Look under the vehicle for any signs of transmission fluid leaks. Low fluid levels can cause pressure issues and incorrect gear ratios.
  3. Transmission Solenoids:

    • The P0731 code often points to issues with the transmission's shift solenoids or the valve body. Solenoids are electronically controlled valves that direct fluid to engage different gears. A faulty solenoid for 1st gear could prevent proper engagement or cause incorrect ratios. These can sometimes be replaced individually, but often require dropping the transmission pan.
  4. Valve Body Issues:

    • The valve body is the hydraulic control center of the transmission. If there's a blockage, wear, or an issue with the internal passages, it can lead to incorrect gear ratios. This is a more complex repair.
  5. Transmission Speed Sensors:

    • Input and output speed sensors provide data to the TCM. If one of these sensors is faulty, the TCM might misinterpret the gear ratio, leading to the P0731 code and limp mode. While less common for a specific gear ratio code, it's worth considering.

When to See a Shop: Given that your Charger is in limp mode and has specific transmission codes, it's highly recommended to have it professionally diagnosed. Transmission issues can quickly escalate if not addressed. A transmission specialist can perform advanced diagnostics, including pressure tests, solenoid resistance checks, and potentially internal inspections, to pinpoint the exact cause of the P0731 code and recommend the appropriate repair.
