Vehicle: 2018 Dodge Charger R/T

Hey everyone,

My 2018 Dodge Charger R/T, with about 75k miles, just threw a Check Engine Light this morning. I scanned it with my OBD-II reader, and it's showing a P0456 code: 'Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (very small leak)'.

The car seems to be running fine, no noticeable performance issues or strange smells. I just filled up the tank yesterday, and I'm pretty sure I tightened the gas cap until it clicked a few times.

Could this just be a loose gas cap, or should I be looking into something more serious? Any common issues with Chargers for this code?

Thanks for any advice!

The P0456 code, 'Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (very small leak)', is a common one and usually indicates a minor issue within your vehicle's EVAP system. This system is designed to prevent fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere.

Here's what you can check and consider:

  1. Check Your Gas Cap: This is the most frequent culprit for a P0456 code.
    • Ensure it's securely tightened. Remove it and re-tighten it until you hear at least 3 clicks.
    • Inspect the rubber seal on the gas cap for any cracks, tears, or debris that might prevent a proper seal. A damaged cap will need replacement.
  2. Clear the Code: After checking/replacing the gas cap, clear the code with your OBD-II scanner. Drive the car for a few days to see if the CEL returns. It might take a few drive cycles for the system to re-run its self-test.
  3. Inspect EVAP Hoses: Look under the hood and possibly under the vehicle (if accessible) for any visible cracks, disconnections, or damage to the rubber hoses connected to the EVAP system components. These hoses can degrade over time.
  4. EVAP System Components: If the gas cap isn't the issue, the problem could lie with other EVAP components, such as:
    • Purge Valve: Located near the engine, it controls the flow of fuel vapors from the charcoal canister to the engine.
    • Vent Valve: Usually located near the fuel tank, it opens to allow fresh air into the canister.
    • Charcoal Canister: Stores fuel vapors.
    • Leak Detection Pump (LDP): On some Dodge models, this pump helps the system detect leaks.

When to See a Shop: If the P0456 code returns after you've checked the gas cap and cleared the code, or if you notice any fuel smell, it's advisable to take your 2018 Dodge Charger R/T to a qualified mechanic. They have specialized smoke machines and diagnostic tools to pinpoint very small leaks in the EVAP system that are difficult to find visually. While a P0456 typically doesn't cause immediate driveability issues, it will prevent your vehicle from passing emissions tests and should be addressed.
