Vehicle: 2018 Dodge Charger R/T

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2018 Dodge Charger R/T with about 70,000 miles on it. Lately, I've noticed a distinct clunking or rattling noise coming from the front end, especially when I go over speed bumps, potholes, or uneven pavement. It seems to be more noticeable at lower speeds and sometimes when turning.

I've checked the lug nuts, and they all seem tight. The steering feels a little looser than it used to, but nothing drastic. Could this be a common issue with these Chargers as they get older? I'm trying to figure out if it's something I can inspect myself before taking it to a shop.

Any ideas on what specific components I should be looking at? Thanks in advance for any help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking or rattling noise from the front suspension of your 2018 Dodge Charger R/T is a common symptom of worn suspension components. Given your mileage, several parts could be nearing the end of their service life. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and what to do:

Common Causes:

  1. Sway Bar End Links: These are a very common culprit for clunking noises over bumps. They connect the sway bar to the control arm or strut and can wear out, causing play and noise.
  2. Control Arm Bushings: The rubber bushings in the upper or lower control arms can degrade and crack over time, leading to metal-on-metal contact or excessive movement.
  3. Ball Joints: Worn ball joints (upper or lower) can cause clunking, especially when turning or going over bumps. They are critical for steering and suspension integrity.
  4. Strut Mounts/Bearings: The top mounts of your struts can wear out, leading to noise and sometimes a 'popping' sensation when turning the steering wheel.
  5. Tie Rod Ends: While less common for a general clunk, worn inner or outer tie rod ends can contribute to loose steering feel and some noise.

When to See a Shop:

It's highly recommended to have a professional mechanic inspect your suspension as soon as possible. Worn suspension components can compromise your vehicle's handling, braking, and overall safety. A qualified technician can:

  1. Perform a thorough visual inspection: They will lift the vehicle and check for play in all suspension components, looking for torn boots, cracked bushings, or loose connections.
  2. Conduct a 'shake down' test: This involves physically moving wheels and suspension parts to identify sources of play and noise.
  3. Diagnose accurately: Pinpointing the exact worn part can be tricky without the right tools and experience.

While you can visually inspect for obvious damage like torn rubber boots, diagnosing play in ball joints or bushings often requires specific techniques and tools. Addressing these issues promptly will prevent further damage to other components and restore your Charger's ride quality and safety.
