Vehicle: 2018 Dodge Charger R/T

Hey everyone,

I'm having some trouble with my 2018 Dodge Charger R/T, 5.7L HEMI. Lately, it's developed a really rough idle, especially when I'm stopped at a light or in traffic. It feels like the engine is shaking more than usual, and sometimes it even feels like it's going to stall.

The Check Engine Light came on a couple of days ago and hasn't gone off. I haven't noticed any significant loss of power while driving, but the idle issue is definitely concerning. Fuel economy seems a little worse too.

I've checked the oil and it's fine. I haven't done much else yet, as I'm not sure where to start. Has anyone experienced something similar with their Charger? Any ideas on what might be causing this or what I should check first?

It sounds like your 2018 Dodge Charger R/T is experiencing a common issue related to engine performance, likely a misfire or fuel/air mixture problem. The Check Engine Light (CEL) is a key indicator here.

Here's what you should do:

  1. Retrieve OBD-II Codes: Your first step should be to get the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from your vehicle's OBD-II system. Most auto parts stores offer this service for free. Common codes for rough idle and misfires include:

    • P030x (e.g., P0301, P0302, etc.) - Misfire detected in cylinder 'x'.
    • P0171 / P0174 - System too lean (Bank 1/Bank 2).
    • P0420 / P0430 - Catalyst system efficiency below threshold.
    • P0016 / P0017 - Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation.
  2. Initial Checks (Based on common causes):

    • Spark Plugs/Coil Packs: Worn spark plugs or failing ignition coil packs are very common causes of misfires and rough idle, especially on HEMI engines. If you have a P030x code, it will point to a specific cylinder.
    • Vacuum Leaks: Inspect all vacuum hoses and connections for cracks, disconnections, or leaks. A vacuum leak can introduce unmetered air, leading to a lean condition and rough idle.
    • Fuel System: Check your fuel pressure if possible. A failing fuel pump or clogged fuel filter could cause insufficient fuel delivery. Also, consider a dirty fuel injector for the affected cylinder if a P030x code is present.
    • Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor: A dirty or faulty MAF sensor can send incorrect air intake readings to the engine control unit (ECU), leading to incorrect fuel-air mixture.
    • PCV Valve: A stuck or clogged PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve can also contribute to vacuum issues and rough idle.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • If the CEL is flashing, this indicates a severe misfire that could damage the catalytic converter. Drive as little as possible and get it to a shop immediately.
    • If you're uncomfortable performing the checks yourself or lack the necessary tools (like a fuel pressure gauge or OBD-II scanner), a qualified mechanic can diagnose the issue accurately.
    • If the problem persists after basic troubleshooting, or if the codes point to more complex issues like catalytic converter failure or internal engine problems, professional diagnosis is essential.

Addressing this promptly will prevent potential further damage to your engine and maintain your Charger's performance.
