Vehicle: 2018 Dodge Charger R/T

My 2018 Dodge Charger R/T's Uconnect 8.4 system keeps freezing up constantly. CarPlay disconnects randomly, and sometimes the whole screen just goes black and becomes unresponsive. It's incredibly frustrating, especially on longer drives.

I've tried doing the soft reset (holding the volume and tune buttons) multiple times, but the problem always comes back. It seems like a software glitch, but I'm not sure. Is this a common problem with the Uconnect system in these models?

What are my options here? Should I be looking for a software update, or could it be a hardware issue with the head unit itself? Any advice on troubleshooting or potential solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Uconnect system issues, including freezing, black screens, and CarPlay/Android Auto disconnections, are common complaints for various Dodge models, especially the 8.4-inch systems. Here's what you should consider:

  1. Software Updates: The most frequent cause is outdated software. Dealerships often have access to the latest firmware updates that aren't always available via over-the-air updates. These updates can resolve bugs and improve system stability.
  2. System Reset: While you've tried a soft reset, a deeper diagnostic reset might be needed, which a dealer can perform. Sometimes, disconnecting the battery for 15-30 minutes can also force a full system reboot, clearing temporary glitches.
  3. TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins): Check if there are any TSBs related to Uconnect performance for your specific 2018 Charger model year. These bulletins outline known issues and prescribed fixes from the manufacturer.
  4. Hardware Diagnosis: If software updates and resets don't work, the issue could be hardware-related, such as a failing head unit or a faulty USB port (for CarPlay/Android Auto). A dealership can run diagnostics to pinpoint internal component failures.

When to see a shop: If basic resets don't resolve the issue, or if the problem is persistent and severe, it's best to schedule an appointment with a certified Dodge service center. They have specialized diagnostic tools to check for error codes (though Uconnect issues don't always throw standard OBD-II P-codes) and perform necessary software flashes or hardware replacements.
