Vehicle: 2018 Dodge Charger R/T

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2018 Dodge Charger R/T with about 65,000 miles on it, and I've started noticing a really annoying clunking sound coming from the front end. It's most noticeable when I go over speed bumps, potholes, or uneven pavement at low speeds.

The sound seems to be coming from both sides, but maybe a bit more pronounced on the passenger side. It's a distinct 'clunk' or 'thud' and it's making me a bit nervous about the suspension.

I haven't hit any major potholes recently, and the car drives straight, no pulling or weird steering feel. Brakes feel fine too. Just this persistent noise. Has anyone else experienced this with their Charger? What should I be looking at first? Thanks for any advice!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking noise from the front suspension, especially over bumps, is a common issue that can stem from several components. It's important to diagnose this promptly as it can affect handling and safety.

Here are the most common causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Sway Bar End Links: These are a very frequent culprit. The bushings or ball joints within the end links can wear out, causing a clunking sound as the sway bar shifts. You can often check these by trying to move the end link by hand when the car is on a lift or jack stands.
  2. Control Arm Bushings: The rubber bushings in the upper or lower control arms can degrade over time, leading to play and noise. Visually inspect them for cracks, tears, or excessive wear.
  3. Ball Joints: Worn lower or upper ball joints can also produce a clunking sound. This is a critical safety component. To check, lift the vehicle and try to move the wheel vertically and horizontally while observing the ball joint for play.
  4. Tie Rod Ends: While more commonly associated with steering play, worn inner or outer tie rod ends can sometimes contribute to clunking, especially if the play is significant.
  5. Struts/Shocks: Although less common for a 'clunk' unless severely damaged, a failing strut mount or a completely blown strut could cause noise. Look for fluid leaks around the strut body.

When to see a shop:

If you're not comfortable inspecting these components yourself, or if you identify significant play in any of the critical suspension parts like ball joints or control arm bushings, it's highly recommended to take your 2018 Dodge Charger R/T to a qualified mechanic immediately. Worn suspension components can compromise vehicle stability, tire wear, and braking performance, posing a safety risk. A professional can accurately diagnose the source of the noise and recommend the necessary repairs.
