Vehicle: 2019 Dodge Charger R/T

Hey everyone,

I'm having a really frustrating issue with my 2019 Dodge Charger R/T. The Uconnect 8.4-inch screen keeps freezing up randomly, sometimes it goes completely black for a few minutes before restarting, or I have to manually reset it. It's happening more frequently now, making navigation and audio controls impossible.

It seems to be worse on hotter days, but it's not exclusive to them. I've tried the soft reset (holding down the volume and tune buttons) a few times, and it works temporarily, but the problem always comes back. I'm worried it might be a bigger electrical issue or a failing module.

Has anyone else experienced this with their 2019 Charger or similar Dodge models? Any tips or tricks before I take it to the dealership? I'd prefer to avoid a costly diagnostic if it's something simple I can check myself.

Uconnect system issues, especially freezing or blackouts, are common and can stem from several electrical or software-related causes. Here are some steps you can take:

  1. Perform a Hard Reset: Disconnect the negative battery terminal for 15-20 minutes. This can sometimes clear persistent electrical gremlins by fully cycling power to all modules. Ensure your vehicle is off and the key is out of the ignition before attempting this.
  2. Check for Software Updates: Connect your Charger to Wi-Fi or visit a dealership to check if there are any pending Uconnect software updates. Outdated software is a frequent cause of system instability. You can often check for updates via the Uconnect system settings under 'System Information' or 'Software Update'.
  3. Inspect Battery and Connections: A weak or failing 12V battery, or corroded battery terminals, can cause erratic electrical behavior, including issues with sensitive electronics like the Uconnect system. Ensure your battery terminals are clean and tight.
  4. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): While Uconnect issues don't always trigger standard OBD-II P-codes, a professional scan tool (like those at a dealership) can read manufacturer-specific codes related to the infotainment module (e.g., B-codes or U-codes). These can pinpoint internal module failures or communication errors.

Potential Causes:

  • Software Glitch: The most common cause, often resolved with updates or resets.
  • Failing Head Unit/Module: The Uconnect head unit itself might be developing an internal fault.
  • Wiring Issues: Less common, but a loose or damaged wire connection to the head unit or related modules could cause intermittent problems.
  • Overheating: As you mentioned it's worse on hotter days, internal component overheating within the head unit could be a factor.

When to See a Shop: If the hard reset and software update checks don't resolve the issue, or if the problem becomes more frequent and severe, it's best to visit a certified Dodge service center. They have specialized diagnostic tools to accurately identify module failures or complex wiring issues that are beyond typical DIY troubleshooting. Be prepared for potential module replacement if diagnostics confirm a hardware fault.
