Vehicle: 2018 Dodge Charger R/T

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2018 Dodge Charger R/T with about 60,000 miles on it, and lately, I've noticed some really rough shifts, especially from 1st to 2nd gear. It's not every time, but it's becoming more frequent and feels pretty harsh. Sometimes there's a noticeable delay before it engages.

It's an automatic, of course, and I'm wondering if this is a known issue with these transmissions or if I should be worried. I've heard about some software updates for earlier models, but not sure if that applies to mine.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Charger or similar Dodge model? What did you do to fix it? Should I be looking at a transmission fluid change or something more serious? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Rough or delayed shifting in your 2018 Dodge Charger R/T is not typically considered normal, especially if it's a recent development. The 8-speed automatic transmission (ZF 8HP) used in these vehicles is generally robust, but issues can arise. Here's what you should consider:

  1. Check Transmission Fluid Level and Condition: This is the first and easiest step. Low or degraded transmission fluid can cause significant shifting problems. The fluid should be clear and reddish, not dark brown or black, and free of burnt smells or metallic particles. Consult your owner's manual for the correct checking procedure, as many modern transmissions are sealed and require specific tools or procedures.

  2. Software Updates/TSBs: Dodge has released numerous Transmission Control Module (TCM) software updates over the years to address various shifting characteristics and improve overall performance. Your 2018 model might have a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) that addresses your specific symptoms. A dealership can check for applicable updates.

  3. Potential Causes for Rough Shifting:

    • Low/Degraded Fluid: As mentioned, this is a primary suspect.
    • Valve Body Issues: The valve body controls the hydraulic pressure that engages the gears. A faulty valve body or sticky solenoids within it can lead to erratic shifting.
    • Transmission Control Module (TCM) Faults: The TCM might be receiving incorrect sensor data or have an internal fault.
    • Torque Converter Issues: While less common for just 1st to 2nd, a failing torque converter can cause various transmission symptoms.
    • Internal Wear: With 60,000 miles, internal wear is possible but less likely to be the sole cause without other symptoms.
  4. When to See a Shop:

    • If you notice any Check Engine Light (CEL) or transmission warning light. Common OBD-II codes related to transmission issues include P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction), P0731 (Incorrect Gear Ratio 1st Gear), or other gear ratio codes.
    • If the fluid level is correct and clean, but the problem persists.
    • If the shifting becomes more severe, includes slipping, or you hear unusual noises.
    • It's crucial to address transmission issues promptly, as ignoring them can lead to more extensive and costly damage. A qualified transmission specialist or a Dodge dealership can perform a diagnostic scan and pinpoint the exact cause.
