Vehicle: 2021 Dodge Durango GT

Hey everyone,

I'm having some strange issues with the HVAC system in my 2021 Dodge Durango GT, equipped with the 3.6L Pentastar engine. Sometimes, when I have the AC on, it blows cold air on the driver's side but warm air on the passenger's side. Other times, it just doesn't seem to cool effectively at all.

To top it off, the check engine light came on, and my scanner pulled a P053F code. From what I can tell, this relates to the A/C Refrigerant Pressure Sensor 'A' Range/Performance. Could this sensor be causing both the inconsistent cooling and the dual-zone temperature problem? Or are these two separate issues?

Any insights or common fixes for these problems on the Durango would be appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It's possible your 2021 Dodge Durango GT is experiencing two related but distinct issues, though the P053F code might be a primary contributor to overall AC performance.

Here's a breakdown of the potential causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. P053F - A/C Refrigerant Pressure Sensor 'A' Range/Performance:

    • Causes: This code indicates an issue with the A/C refrigerant pressure sensor or its circuit. It could be a faulty sensor, a wiring problem (chafed, corroded, or disconnected), or incorrect refrigerant pressure (either too high or too low). If the sensor is providing inaccurate readings, the HVAC system's control module won't be able to properly regulate the compressor and refrigerant flow, leading to poor cooling performance.
    • Diagnosis: A technician can test the sensor's output with a scan tool and check the refrigerant pressure directly using manifold gauges. They can also inspect the wiring and connector for damage.
  2. Dual-Zone Temperature Discrepancy (Cold Driver, Warm Passenger):

    • Causes: This symptom is highly indicative of a faulty blend door actuator. Your Durango has multiple blend door actuators that control the mix of hot and cold air for different zones. If the passenger side actuator is stuck or malfunctioning, it might not be able to direct cold air into that zone.
    • Diagnosis: You can sometimes hear clicking or grinding noises from behind the dashboard when changing temperature settings if an actuator is failing. A scan tool can also command and monitor the position of these actuators to confirm their operation.

Relationship between the two: While the blend door actuator directly causes the dual-zone issue, a faulty refrigerant pressure sensor (P053F) could lead to overall poor AC performance, making any blend door issue more noticeable or exacerbating the feeling of inadequate cooling.

When to See a Shop: For both issues, especially with an active P053F code, it's best to take your Durango to a qualified automotive HVAC specialist or dealership. They have the necessary equipment to safely handle refrigerant, accurately diagnose sensor and wiring issues, and access and replace blend door actuators, which can be a labor-intensive job depending on their location.
