Vehicle: 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT

Hi everyone,

I'm having some trouble with my 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT, which has the 3.6L Pentastar engine. Lately, it's been stalling intermittently when I come to a stop or when it's just idling in traffic. It also feels like it's running a bit rough at idle, almost like it wants to die.

The strange thing is, the check engine light hasn't come on yet, so I don't have any codes to pull. I'm worried it might be a vacuum leak, a dirty throttle body, or something with the fuel system. It has about 75,000 miles on it.

Has anyone experienced similar symptoms with their Grand Caravan? What should I be looking for or checking first without a CEL?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Stalling and rough idle without a Check Engine Light (CEL) can be frustrating, but it often points to issues that are just starting to develop or are not yet severe enough to trigger a fault code. Your 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan's 3.6L Pentastar engine is generally robust, but certain components can cause these symptoms.

Here's a diagnostic approach:

  1. Check for Pending Codes:

    • Even without an illuminated CEL, your scanner might show "pending codes" or "history codes." These are codes the ECU has detected but hasn't yet confirmed as a persistent fault. Always check for these first.
  2. Inspect for Vacuum Leaks:

    • Vacuum leaks are a very common cause of rough idle and stalling. Inspect all vacuum hoses and connections around the intake manifold, PCV valve, and brake booster for cracks, disconnections, or signs of dry rot. You can sometimes hear a hissing sound, or a smoke test can pinpoint leaks.
  3. Clean the Throttle Body:

    • Over time, carbon and oil deposits can build up on the throttle plate and bore, restricting airflow at idle and causing rough running or stalling. A thorough cleaning with throttle body cleaner can often resolve this. Ensure you use a cleaner safe for electronic throttle bodies.
  4. PCV Valve Inspection:

    • A clogged or faulty PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve can lead to incorrect crankcase pressure and affect idle quality. It's a relatively inexpensive part to replace.
  5. Fuel System Checks:

    • Fuel Filter: While many modern vehicles have lifetime fuel filters, if yours is replaceable and hasn't been changed, a clogged filter could restrict fuel flow.
    • Fuel Pressure: Low fuel pressure from a failing fuel pump or regulator can cause stalling. This requires a fuel pressure gauge to test.

When to See a Shop: If you've performed these basic checks and the problem persists, or if you find any pending codes, it's advisable to take your Grand Caravan to a professional mechanic. They can perform more advanced diagnostics, such as live data monitoring (to observe sensor readings in real-time), fuel pressure tests, and a comprehensive vacuum leak test, to accurately identify the root cause of the stalling and rough idle.
