Vehicle: 2022 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT

My remote start feature on my 2022 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT has suddenly stopped working. When I press the remote start button twice on my key fob, the parking lights flash as usual, but the engine doesn't even attempt to crank. It's completely silent.

However, the van starts perfectly fine using the push-button start inside the car. I've already tried replacing the battery in my key fob, thinking that might be the issue, but unfortunately, it made no difference. I also tried using my spare key fob, and it has the same problem.

Is there a common issue with the remote start system, security module, or perhaps a specific sensor that prevents remote starting on these newer Grand Caravans? I'm trying to figure out if this is something I can troubleshoot myself or if it's a dealership visit.

Remote start issues on your 2022 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT can be frustrating, especially when the vehicle starts normally with the push button. This often points to a specific condition or sensor input that the remote start system requires, which isn't met.

  1. Check for Open Conditions: The remote start system is designed with several safety interlocks. Ensure the following are true:

    • Hood Latch: The hood must be fully closed and the sensor indicating it's closed must be functioning. A faulty hood latch sensor is a very common cause.
    • Doors: All doors, including the liftgate, must be fully closed.
    • Fuel Level: The fuel tank must have a minimum amount of fuel (usually around 1/4 tank).
    • Check Engine Light (CEL): If your CEL is illuminated for any reason, remote start will typically be disabled.
  2. Key Fob Range and Signal: While you replaced the battery, ensure there's no excessive interference or distance issues. Try it from very close to the vehicle.

  3. Brake Light Switch: A faulty brake light switch (which tells the car if the brake pedal is pressed) can sometimes interfere with remote start, as the system needs to confirm the brake isn't applied.

  4. Security System/BCM: The Body Control Module (BCM) manages the remote start function. A glitch in the BCM or a component of the vehicle's security system could be preventing it. While not always an OBD-II code, a more advanced scanner can sometimes pull BCM-specific codes (e.g., U-codes for communication issues, or B-codes for body electrical faults).

  5. Causes:

    • Faulty hood latch sensor (most common).
    • BCM software glitch or internal fault.
    • Wiring issue to the remote start antenna or module.
    • Faulty key fob transmitter (less likely if both fobs fail).
  6. When to See a Shop:

    • If checking the hood latch, door closures, and fuel level doesn't resolve the issue.
    • If you don't have access to a diagnostic scanner that can read BCM codes.
    • A dealership or qualified technician can use their diagnostic tools to read specific remote start system fault codes and perform targeted testing on sensors and modules, which is often necessary for these types of issues.
