Instrument Cluster Flickering on 2017 Dodge Journey

Vehicle: 2017 Dodge Journey SXT

I'm experiencing a really annoying and somewhat concerning issue with the instrument cluster in my 2017 Dodge Journey SXT. It has started flickering intermittently. Sometimes it goes completely dark for a second or two, then comes back on as if nothing happened. All the gauges and warning lights seem to function normally when it's lit up.

The flickering seems to happen more frequently when I hit a bump in the road, go over railroad tracks, or sometimes even when making a sharp turn. This makes me suspect it might be a loose connection, but I'm not sure where to start looking.

Could this be a simple wiring problem, or is it indicative of something more serious like a failing instrument cluster module itself? I'd appreciate any guidance before I start tearing apart the dashboard.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The flickering instrument cluster in your 2017 Dodge Journey SXT, especially when triggered by bumps or turns, strongly suggests an electrical connection issue. While it could be the cluster itself, it's more often related to power or ground.

  1. Check Fuses: Start by checking the fuses related to the instrument cluster and interior lighting. Consult your owner's manual for the exact fuse locations (usually in the fuse box under the hood and/or inside the cabin, typically on the driver's side). A loose or corroded fuse can cause intermittent power.

  2. Inspect Wiring and Connectors:

    • Behind the Cluster: The main wiring harness connecting to the back of the instrument cluster can become loose. This often requires removing the trim around the cluster to access it. Gently push on the connector to ensure it's seated properly.
    • Ground Points: Poor ground connections are a common cause of intermittent electrical issues. Look for ground wires connected to the vehicle's chassis, especially in the dashboard area. Ensure they are clean and tight.
  3. Battery and Charging System: While less likely to cause isolated flickering, a weak battery or fluctuating voltage from the alternator could contribute to electrical anomalies. Ensure your battery terminals are clean and tight.

  4. Causes:

    • Loose Wiring/Connector: The most probable cause, especially with movement-triggered symptoms.
    • Faulty Ground: A corroded or loose ground wire can cause intermittent power loss.
    • Instrument Cluster Module Failure: The module itself can fail internally, but typically this leads to more consistent issues or complete failure rather than just flickering.
    • Body Control Module (BCM) Issues: The BCM communicates with the cluster; a BCM fault could cause display issues, sometimes indicated by U-codes (communication errors) if scanned with an advanced tool.
  5. When to See a Shop:

    • If you've checked fuses and visually inspected accessible wiring/connectors without finding a clear issue.
    • If you're uncomfortable disassembling dashboard components to check the cluster's main connector.
    • If the problem persists, a technician can use diagnostic tools to check for communication errors between the BCM and the instrument cluster, and perform more in-depth electrical diagnostics to pinpoint the exact fault.
