2020 Ford Escape Titanium - Cranks but No Start, Security Light Flashing

Vehicle: 2020 Ford Escape Titanium

My 2020 Ford Escape Titanium, 1.5L EcoBoost, is giving me a headache. This morning, I went to start it, and it just cranks and cranks but won't catch. It sounds like it's trying, but nothing happens. The battery seems fine, as it's cranking strongly.

What's really concerning is that the little red security light on the dash is flashing rapidly while I'm trying to start it. It usually just blinks slowly when the car is off. I've tried using both key fobs, but no luck with either. Could this be an immobilizer issue or something else? The car has about 45,000 miles on it.

Any advice on what I should check or if there's a common fix for this on the newer Escapes? I'm stranded and need to figure this out.

Your 2020 Ford Escape Titanium's symptoms—cranking but no start, combined with a rapidly flashing security light—strongly suggest an issue with the Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS), also known as the immobilizer system. This system prevents the engine from starting if it doesn't recognize the key's transponder.

Here’s what you can investigate:

  1. PATS System Check:

    • The rapid flashing of the security light is the key indicator here. It means the PATS module is not recognizing the key's transponder signal.
    • Ensure there are no other electronic devices (like other car keys, RFID cards) on the same keyring that could interfere with the signal.
  2. Key Fob Battery:

    • While the car is cranking, the key fob itself doesn't need battery power to send the transponder signal (it's passive). However, a very weak fob battery could sometimes cause communication issues, though it's less likely to prevent starting entirely if the car cranks.
  3. Try a 'Hard Reset':

    • Disconnect the negative terminal of your car battery for about 15-30 minutes. This can sometimes reset modules and clear temporary glitches. Reconnect and try starting again.
  4. Check for Blown Fuses:

    • Review your owner's manual for fuses related to the powertrain control module (PCM), ignition, and security system. A blown fuse in one of these circuits could prevent the engine from receiving fuel or spark.
  5. Steering Column/Ignition Switch Issues:

    • Sometimes, issues with the ignition switch or the transponder antenna ring around the ignition cylinder can prevent the PATS from reading the key. Try wiggling the key slightly while attempting to start, though this is less common on push-button start systems.

When to See a Shop: If these steps don't resolve the issue, you'll need to have your Escape towed to a Ford dealership or a qualified automotive locksmith/mechanic with diagnostic tools capable of communicating with the PATS module. They can:

  • Read specific immobilizer fault codes (e.g., B-codes or U-codes).
  • Reprogram your existing keys or program new ones if the keys have lost their programming.
  • Diagnose a faulty PATS module, PCM, or transponder antenna. This is crucial for a no-start condition directly linked to the security system.
