Vehicle: 2022 Ford Escape Titanium

Hey everyone,

My 2022 Ford Escape Titanium has started displaying a 'BLIS Fault' message on the instrument cluster. It started intermittently a few weeks ago, but now it's almost constant whenever I'm driving. Sometimes it clears itself for a bit, but then comes right back.

I've tried cleaning the rear bumper where the sensors are located, thinking it might just be dirt or mud, but that hasn't helped. There's no visible damage to the bumper or sensors. Is this a common issue with the BLIS system on newer Escapes? What could be causing this fault?

Any insights or troubleshooting tips would be great!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A 'BLIS Fault' message indicates an issue with your Blind Spot Information System. This system relies on radar sensors, typically located in the rear bumper corners, to detect vehicles in your blind spots. Here are common causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Sensor Obstruction/Damage:

    • Even if you've cleaned them, ensure there's no ice, snow, mud, or even a sticker/decal covering the sensor area on the bumper. These sensors are sensitive.
    • Inspect the bumper for any minor impacts or misalignments that could have shifted the sensor's position or damaged its internal components.
  2. Wiring Issues:

    • The wiring harness connecting the BLIS sensors to the control module can be susceptible to damage from road debris, moisture, or even rodent activity. A broken or corroded wire can cause intermittent or constant faults.
  3. BLIS Module Malfunction:

    • The BLIS control module itself (often integrated with the sensors or located nearby) can fail. Internal electronic issues or water intrusion can cause it to stop communicating or function incorrectly.
  4. Software Glitch/Recalibration:

    • Sometimes, a software glitch can cause a false fault. A battery disconnect (for 15-30 minutes) can sometimes reset modules. However, BLIS sensors often require precise calibration after any repair or even a minor impact, which is a dealer-level procedure.

When to See a Shop:

  • If cleaning the sensors doesn't resolve the issue.
  • If you suspect wiring damage or a faulty BLIS module. These components are often difficult to access and diagnose without specialized tools.
  • If the fault persists after a battery reset. A Ford dealership can perform diagnostic scans (looking for codes like B11D8, B11D9, B11DA, etc. related to BLIS) and recalibrate the system if necessary, ensuring proper functionality and safety.
