Vehicle: 2022 Ford Explorer XLT

Hey everyone, I'm having a frustrating issue with the power liftgate on my 2022 Ford Explorer XLT. For the past few days, it's been acting up. Sometimes it won't open at all, either with the button on the key fob, the button inside the car, or the one on the liftgate itself.

Other times, it will open, but then it won't close, or it will close partially and then stop. I've tried checking for obstructions, but there's nothing in the way. It's really inconvenient, especially when I'm trying to load groceries or gear.

Has anyone else experienced this with their newer Explorer? Is there a common fix or a fuse I should check? I'm hoping it's not an expensive motor replacement.

Malfunctions with power liftgates are a common complaint across many vehicle makes and models, and your 2022 Ford Explorer XLT's symptoms are typical of several potential issues. While convenient, these systems have multiple components that can fail.

  1. Common Causes:

    • Actuator/Motor Failure: The electric motor or actuator that powers the liftgate can wear out or fail, leading to intermittent or complete loss of function. This is a common culprit.
    • Strut Issues: The power liftgate often uses specialized struts that contain the motor or assist in the opening/closing. If these fail, the liftgate may struggle to move.
    • Wiring Harness Damage: Over time, the wiring harness that runs to the liftgate can become frayed or damaged, especially where it flexes when the gate opens and closes. This can cause intermittent electrical contact.
    • Control Module Glitch: The Body Control Module (BCM) or a dedicated liftgate control module could experience a software glitch or internal fault.
    • Sensor Malfunction: The system relies on sensors to detect obstructions and the gate's position. A faulty sensor could cause it to stop prematurely or refuse to operate.
    • Blown Fuse: While less likely for intermittent issues, a blown fuse for the liftgate circuit would cause a complete failure. It's worth checking your owner's manual for the fuse location.
  2. Troubleshooting Steps:

    • Manual Operation: Try manually opening and closing the liftgate (if your model allows) to see if there's any physical binding or resistance.
    • Check for Obstructions: Even small debris in the latch mechanism or along the gate's path can trigger safety sensors.
    • Battery Disconnect: Sometimes, disconnecting the vehicle's battery for 15-30 minutes can reset control modules and clear temporary glitches.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • If checking fuses and performing a battery reset doesn't resolve the issue, it's best to take your Explorer to a Ford dealership or a trusted automotive electrical specialist. They have diagnostic tools that can communicate with the BCM and other modules to pull specific B-codes (Body codes) related to the liftgate system.
    • These codes can pinpoint whether the issue is with the motor, a sensor, or the control module. While not a safety critical item like brakes, the inconvenience warrants professional diagnosis and repair, especially since your vehicle is relatively new and likely still under warranty.
