Vehicle: 2022 Ford Explorer XLT

Hello everyone,

I'm having an issue with my 2022 Ford Explorer XLT. Both the ABS light and the Traction Control light came on simultaneously on my dashboard a couple of days ago, and they've stayed on since. The car has about 25,000 miles on it.

I haven't noticed any immediate changes in braking performance, but I'm worried about driving it with these critical safety systems disabled. I tried turning the car off and on, but the lights remain. I also noticed the cruise control isn't working, which I've heard can be related.

Has anyone experienced this with a newer Explorer? What could be the cause? Are there any common OBD codes associated with this problem? Any advice on what to check or if I need to take it straight to the dealer would be great. Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both the ABS and Traction Control lights illuminate, it indicates a fault within the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) or a related component. Since these systems are interconnected, a fault in one often disables the other. The cruise control also being disabled is a common symptom, as it relies on wheel speed sensor data.

  1. Common Causes:

    • Wheel Speed Sensors (WSS): These are the most frequent culprits. A faulty, dirty, or damaged wheel speed sensor (also known as an ABS sensor) at any of the four wheels can trigger these lights. The sensor provides data to the ABS module, and if it's incorrect or missing, the system faults.
    • ABS Module Failure: Less common, but the ABS control module itself can fail. This is a more expensive repair.
    • Wiring Issues: Damaged wiring or connectors leading to the wheel speed sensors or ABS module.
    • Low Brake Fluid: While less likely to trigger both lights simultaneously without other warnings, extremely low brake fluid can sometimes cause issues.
  2. Relevant OBD Codes:

    • You won't typically find these codes with a generic OBD-II scanner. You'll need a scanner capable of reading ABS-specific codes. Common codes related to wheel speed sensors include:
      • C0031 - C0034: Left Front, Right Front, Left Rear, Right Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction.
      • C003A - C003D: Wheel Speed Sensor Supply Voltage Malfunction.
  3. What to Do:

    • Scan for Codes: The first step is to get the vehicle scanned with an ABS-compatible diagnostic tool. This will pinpoint which sensor or circuit is faulty. Many auto parts stores offer free code reading services.
    • Visual Inspection: If a wheel speed sensor code is present, visually inspect the sensor and its wiring at the indicated wheel. Look for physical damage, corrosion, or debris on the sensor tip. Sometimes, simply cleaning the sensor can resolve the issue.
    • Check Brake Fluid: Ensure your brake fluid reservoir is at the proper level.
  4. When to See a Shop:

    • Safety: While your regular brakes might still work, the ABS and Traction Control systems are crucial for emergency braking and stability. Driving without them can be dangerous, especially in adverse conditions.
    • Complex Diagnosis: If cleaning the sensor doesn't work, or if the codes point to the ABS module or more complex wiring issues, professional diagnosis and repair are necessary. A Ford dealership or a reputable independent shop with advanced diagnostic equipment can accurately troubleshoot and fix the problem.
