2016 F-150 4x4 Grinding Noise - IWE Issue?

Hey everyone,

My 2016 Ford F-150 Lariat (with the 5.0L V8) has started making a strange grinding noise from the front end, particularly when I'm accelerating or going over bumps at lower speeds. It sounds like it's coming from the driver's side front wheel area.

I've done some searching online, and it seems like a lot of F-150 owners point to the IWEs (Integrated Wheel Ends) as a common culprit for this kind of noise. Is this a known issue for the 2016 model year?

What should I be looking for or checking to confirm if it's the IWEs, vacuum lines, or perhaps the solenoid? Any advice on diagnosing this before I take it to a shop would be greatly appreciated!

Summary: For 2016 F-150 4x4 Grinding Noise - IWE Issue?, work through these steps on your 2015+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
