Vehicle: 2016 Ford Focus SE

Hi all,

I'm having an issue with the driver's side power window on my 2016 Ford Focus SE. It stopped working completely a few days ago. It won't go up or down, and I don't hear any motor noise when I press the switch. All other windows (passenger front, rear) are working fine from their respective switches and the driver's master switch.

I'm wondering if this is a common problem for the Focus. Could it be the switch, the motor, or something else electrical? It's pretty inconvenient, especially with the weather changing. Any advice on how to diagnose this before I take it in?

Thanks for your help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A non-functional driver's side power window on your 2016 Ford Focus SE is a common issue, and the fact that you hear no motor noise points to a few specific electrical culprits. Since the other windows work, it narrows down the possibilities significantly.

Common Causes:

  1. Faulty Window Switch: This is a very common failure point. The contacts inside the switch can wear out or corrode, preventing power from reaching the motor. Since the other windows work from the master switch, it suggests the master switch itself might be okay, but the specific contact for the driver's window could be bad.
  2. Bad Window Motor: The electric motor that moves the window up and down can fail. If you hear no sound at all, it's a strong indicator the motor isn't receiving power or is internally seized.
  3. Broken or Frayed Wiring: Over time, the wiring harness that passes through the door jamb (between the body and the door) can become brittle and break due to repeated opening and closing of the door.
  4. Blown Fuse: While less likely if other windows work, a specific fuse for the driver's window or door module could be blown. Consult your owner's manual for the fuse box diagram.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check Fuse: Locate the fuse box (usually under the hood or inside the cabin) and check the fuse specifically for the driver's side window. Replace if blown.
  2. Listen Carefully: Have someone press the switch while you listen closely to the door panel. Even a faint click could indicate the switch is working, but the motor or regulator is stuck.
  3. Test for Power at Motor (Advanced): If comfortable, remove the door panel and use a multimeter to check for power at the window motor connector when the switch is pressed. If power is present, the motor is likely bad. If no power, the issue is upstream (switch or wiring).

When to See a Shop:

If you're not comfortable removing the door panel or performing electrical tests with a multimeter, it's best to take your Focus to a qualified mechanic. They can quickly diagnose whether the issue is the switch, motor, or a wiring break using specialized tools. Addressing this quickly will prevent further inconvenience and potential security issues. There are no specific OBD-II codes for a power window malfunction, as it's typically a direct electrical circuit issue.
