Vehicle: 2016 Ford Focus SE

Hi all, I own a 2016 Ford Focus SE with the automatic transmission, and for a while now, I've been experiencing a really annoying shudder and jerking, especially at low speeds or when accelerating from a stop. It feels like the car can't decide what gear it wants to be in, and it's very rough.

It's particularly noticeable in stop-and-go traffic. Sometimes it feels like the clutch is slipping, or it's just generally hesitant. There's no check engine light on yet, but it's making driving very unpleasant. Is this a known issue with these cars?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The symptoms you're describing are unfortunately very common with the 2012-2016 Ford Focus and Fiesta models equipped with the 6-speed PowerShift dual-clutch automatic transmission (DPS6). This transmission has been the subject of numerous complaints and even class-action lawsuits.

Common Causes:

  1. Clutch Pack Wear: The dry clutch packs in the PowerShift transmission are prone to premature wear, leading to shuddering, jerking, and hesitation, especially at low speeds.
  2. Transmission Control Module (TCM) Issues: Software glitches or hardware failures within the TCM can cause incorrect clutch engagement and shifting patterns.
  3. Input Shaft Seals: Leaking input shaft seals can contaminate the clutch material with transmission fluid, leading to slippage and shudder.

What to Do:

  1. Check for Recalls/TSBs: Ford has issued numerous Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) and extended warranties related to the PowerShift transmission. Check with a Ford dealership if your VIN is covered.
  2. Software Update: Sometimes, a simple software update for the TCM can improve shift quality, though it often doesn't resolve mechanical issues.
  3. Professional Diagnosis: A Ford dealership or a transmission specialist should diagnose the issue. They can check for fault codes (even if the CEL isn't on, codes like P0700, P07A3, P07A4, P287A, P287B might be stored) and perform clutch adaptation procedures.

When to See a Shop:

You should see a shop immediately. Continued driving with these symptoms can worsen the condition and potentially lead to more expensive repairs. While Ford has extended warranties on certain components (like the TCM and clutch assembly) for these transmissions, it's crucial to get it diagnosed to understand your options. Be prepared for the possibility that clutch replacement or TCM replacement might be recommended.
