Vehicle: 2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5L EcoBoost

Hey everyone, I've got a 2017 Ford F-150 Lariat with the 3.5L EcoBoost and the 10-speed transmission. Lately, I've noticed a slight shudder, especially when accelerating gently around 40-50 mph. It's not constant, but definitely noticeable and feels like it's coming from the drivetrain.

My truck has about 85,000 miles on it now. I've been reading online about these transmissions and some people suggest a fluid and filter change might help with shudders. Is this something I should be looking into? What's the recommended interval for transmission fluid on these newer F-150s?

Also, if I do decide to get it done, is it a DIY job or better left to a professional? I'm pretty handy but haven't tackled a transmission service before.

The shudder you're experiencing in your 2017 F-150's 10R80 transmission is a common complaint, often related to the transmission fluid condition or internal components. While the 10R80 is generally robust, fluid degradation can lead to these symptoms.

Causes of Transmission Shudder:

  • Degraded Transmission Fluid: Over time and mileage, transmission fluid loses its lubricating and friction-modifying properties. This is a primary cause of shudders and rough shifts.
  • Torque Converter Issues: Less commonly, the torque converter clutch can cause shuddering. Fluid change is often the first step to rule out fluid-related issues.
  • Software Glitches: Sometimes, a transmission control module (TCM) reflash can resolve minor shifting anomalies, though less likely for a distinct shudder.

Recommended Action Steps:

  1. Check Fluid Level and Condition: Before anything else, ensure your transmission fluid level is correct according to the owner's manual. Note the fluid's color and smell; dark, burnt-smelling fluid is a strong indicator it needs changing.
  2. Transmission Fluid and Filter Service: Given your mileage (85,000 miles), a transmission fluid and filter change is highly recommended. While Ford often states 'lifetime' fluid, most experts agree on a 60,000-100,000 mile interval for severe duty or if symptoms arise. For the 10R80, it's crucial to use the correct Motorcraft MERCON® ULV fluid to avoid further issues.
  3. Consider a Full Flush (with caution): A complete fluid flush can replace more of the old fluid than a pan drop. However, if the fluid is extremely dirty, a flush can sometimes dislodge debris and cause new problems. A pan drop and filter change is safer if you're unsure.

When to See a Shop:

  • If the shudder persists or worsens after a fluid change.
  • If you notice any OBD codes related to the transmission (e.g., P0731, P0732, P0741 for torque converter clutch performance).
  • If you're uncomfortable performing the service yourself. The 10R80 can be complex, and using the wrong fluid or improper procedures can lead to costly repairs. A professional shop has the right tools and experience for this specific transmission.
