Vehicle: 2018 Ford F-150 Lariat

Hey everyone, I'm having a persistent issue with my 2018 Ford F-150 Lariat, 3.5L EcoBoost. Lately, it's developed a really rough idle, especially when cold, and I've noticed a significant loss of power under acceleration.

The check engine light came on, and when I scanned it, I got multiple misfire codes: P0301, P0303, and P0305, indicating misfires on cylinders 1, 3, and 5. It feels like the engine is shaking pretty bad.

I've already tried replacing the spark plugs, but that didn't seem to help much. Could this be an ignition coil issue, or something more serious like a fuel injector problem? Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It sounds like you're dealing with a common issue for the 3.5L EcoBoost, especially with multiple misfire codes (P0301, P0303, P0305).

  1. Diagnose Ignition Coils: Even though you replaced spark plugs, individual ignition coils can fail. Swap the suspected faulty coils (cylinders 1, 3, 5) with known good coils from other cylinders (e.g., 2, 4, 6) and see if the misfire codes follow the coils. If they do, replace the faulty coils.
  2. Inspect Fuel Injectors: Clogged or failing fuel injectors are another common cause of misfires in direct-injection engines. A professional can test fuel injector spray patterns and flow rates. Carbon buildup on the intake valves (due to direct injection) can also contribute, though usually less directly to specific cylinder misfires unless severe.
  3. Check for Vacuum Leaks: A vacuum leak can cause a lean condition and rough idle, potentially leading to misfires. Inspect all vacuum lines and intake manifold gaskets for cracks or leaks.
  4. PCV Valve: A faulty PCV valve can cause vacuum issues and oil consumption, impacting engine performance.
  5. Timing Chain/Phasers: In more severe cases, issues with the timing chain or variable cam timing (VCT) phasers can cause misfires and rough running, though usually accompanied by other specific codes (e.g., P0016, P0017).

When to see a shop: If swapping coils doesn't resolve the issue, or if you suspect fuel injector problems, carbon buildup, or timing-related issues, it's best to take your F-150 to a qualified Ford technician. They have specialized diagnostic tools to pinpoint the exact cause of the misfires and perform necessary repairs, such as injector cleaning or replacement, or more complex timing component work. Ignoring persistent misfires can lead to catalytic converter damage.
