Vehicle: 2018 Ford F-150 Lariat

Hey everyone,

My 2018 Ford F-150 Lariat's Sync 3 system has been acting up for the past few weeks. It constantly freezes, becomes unresponsive, and then reboots itself. This happens whether I'm using Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM, or just the regular radio.

It's incredibly frustrating, especially when I'm trying to use navigation or make a hands-free call. I've tried doing a master reset through the settings menu a couple of times, but the problem always comes back within a day or two. Is this a known issue with the Sync 3 system in these trucks? What could be causing it?

Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Sync 3 freezing and rebooting is a common complaint, especially in earlier versions of the system. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and solutions:

  1. Perform a Soft Reset: While you've done a master reset, sometimes a simple soft reset can temporarily clear glitches. Hold the Power button (volume knob) and the Seek Right button simultaneously for about 10 seconds until the screen goes black and the Ford logo appears.

  2. Check for Software Updates: Outdated software is a frequent culprit. Connect your vehicle to Wi-Fi or use a USB drive with an update downloaded from the Ford Owner website. Navigate to Settings > General > Automatic System Updates to check for available updates. Newer software versions often include bug fixes for stability.

  3. Corrupt Files/Data: If you frequently use USB drives for media, ensure they are formatted correctly and don't contain corrupt files, as this can sometimes interfere with the system.

  4. APIM Module Failure: The Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) is the brain of the Sync 3 system. If software updates and resets don't resolve the issue, the APIM itself might be failing. This is a more serious hardware issue.

When to See a Shop:

  • If software updates don't fix the problem.
  • If the system becomes completely unresponsive or consistently fails to boot.
  • If you suspect a hardware issue with the APIM module. A Ford dealership or a qualified automotive electronics specialist can diagnose the APIM and replace it if necessary. This typically requires specialized tools for programming the new module to your vehicle.
