Vehicle: 2017 Ford Mustang GT

Hey everyone,

I'm having a frustrating issue with my 2017 Ford Mustang GT. Recently, both the ABS light and the Traction Control light have come on and stayed on. I also noticed that my cruise control isn't working anymore, which I hear can be related.

I scanned the car with my OBD-II reader, and it's showing a U0415 code, which points to 'Invalid Data Received from Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module'. I haven't noticed any actual braking issues, but having these lights on is concerning, and I miss my cruise control.

Could this be a wheel speed sensor, or something more serious with the ABS module itself? Any common issues with these systems on the S550 Mustangs? Thanks for any insights!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The U0415 code on your 2017 Ford Mustang GT, along with the illuminated ABS and Traction Control lights, indicates a communication issue or invalid data from the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module. The non-functional cruise control is a common symptom, as cruise control often relies on wheel speed data from the ABS system.

Here's a breakdown of the code and potential causes:

  1. U0415 - Invalid Data Received from Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module: This is a communication fault code. It means another module on the vehicle's network (like the Powertrain Control Module or Body Control Module) is receiving incorrect or no data from the ABS module. This doesn't necessarily mean the ABS module itself is faulty, but rather that its communication is compromised.

Common Causes:

  • Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS) Issues: This is a very common cause. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If one sensor is faulty, dirty, or its wiring is damaged, it sends incorrect or no data to the ABS module. The ABS module then can't accurately determine wheel speed, leading to the U0415 code and disabling related systems like ABS, Traction Control, and Cruise Control.
    • Symptoms: Often, a specific wheel speed sensor code (e.g., C0031-C0034 for front/rear left/right WSS) might accompany U0415, but not always.
  • Wiring Harness or Connector Issues: Damaged, corroded, or loose wiring and connectors between the wheel speed sensors and the ABS module, or between the ABS module and the rest of the vehicle's network (CAN bus), can disrupt communication.
  • Faulty ABS Control Module: While less common than sensor issues, the ABS module itself can fail internally, leading to communication errors or incorrect data processing. This is typically a more expensive repair.
  • Low Battery Voltage: Sometimes, a weak battery can cause various modules to malfunction or communicate improperly, leading to 'U' codes. Ensure your battery is in good health.

What to Check:

  • Visual Inspection of Wheel Speed Sensors and Wiring: Inspect each wheel speed sensor and its wiring for any visible damage, fraying, or corrosion. Pay close attention to the connectors. Sometimes, debris can accumulate on the sensor, affecting its reading.
  • Check for Additional Codes: Use a more advanced scanner if possible, as it might reveal specific 'C' (Chassis) codes related to individual wheel speed sensors that a basic OBD-II scanner might not show.

When to See a Shop: If a visual inspection doesn't reveal obvious damage, or if you don't have access to an advanced scanner to check individual wheel speed sensor data, it's highly recommended to take your Mustang to a qualified mechanic. They can perform a thorough diagnostic using specialized tools to:

  • Read live data from each wheel speed sensor to identify which one is reporting incorrectly.
  • Test the continuity and resistance of the wiring harnesses.
  • Diagnose the ABS module itself if sensors and wiring are confirmed good.

Driving with these lights on means your ABS and Traction Control systems are disabled, which can be a safety concern, especially in adverse weather conditions. Prompt diagnosis and repair are advisable.
