Vehicle: 2021 Ford Ranger Lariat

Hi all,

I'm having an issue with my 2021 Ford Ranger Lariat. The driver's side power window suddenly stopped working completely. It won't go up or down, and I don't hear any motor noise when I press the switch. All other windows (passenger, rear) work perfectly fine from their respective switches and the driver's master switch.

I've checked the fuse box diagram, but I'm not entirely sure which fuse specifically controls the driver's window. Could it just be a blown fuse, or am I looking at something more serious like a bad motor or switch? It was working fine yesterday, and today, nothing.

Any guidance on where to start troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A non-functional power window, especially with no motor noise, usually points to a few common electrical culprits. Here's how to troubleshoot your 2021 Ford Ranger Lariat's driver's side window:

  1. Check the Fuse:

    • Consult your owner's manual for the exact fuse location and number for the driver's side power window. Often, there's a main fuse for all windows and individual fuses for specific windows or circuits. A blown fuse is the easiest and cheapest fix.
    • Visually inspect the fuse. If it's blown, replace it with one of the exact same amperage rating.
  2. Test the Window Switch:

    • Since other windows work from the master switch, the master switch itself is likely fine for those circuits. However, the specific contact for the driver's window within the master switch could be faulty.
    • You can try swapping the driver's side switch with a known good one (e.g., from the passenger side, if compatible) to see if the problem moves.
    • A multimeter can be used to test for continuity and power at the switch terminals.
  3. Inspect Wiring:

    • Wiring can become damaged, especially where it passes through the door jamb (the flexible boot between the door and the body). Repeated opening and closing of the door can cause wires to fray or break.
    • Look for any visible signs of damage or corrosion in the wiring harness inside the door panel.
  4. Diagnose the Window Motor/Regulator:

    • If the fuse is good and the switch is sending power, the issue is likely the window motor or the window regulator assembly.
    • The motor can fail electrically, or the regulator (the mechanism that moves the window up and down) can seize or break. Since you hear no motor noise, an electrical motor failure is more probable than a mechanical regulator issue.
    • You can test for power at the motor connector inside the door panel. If power is present but the motor doesn't move, the motor is faulty.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you're uncomfortable removing door panels or performing electrical tests.
  • If the problem isn't a simple fuse and you've confirmed power is reaching the motor but it's still not working.
  • Replacing a window motor or regulator often requires specialized tools and knowledge to ensure the window operates smoothly and seals correctly.
