Vehicle: 2020 Genesis G70 3.3T Sport

Hello Genesis owners!

I'm having some serious issues with the infotainment system in my 2020 Genesis G70 3.3T Sport. Lately, the screen has been freezing up entirely, sometimes becoming unresponsive to touch. It usually happens after about 15-20 minutes of driving.

On top of that, Apple CarPlay constantly disconnects and reconnects, which is super annoying when I'm using navigation or listening to music. I've tried restarting the car, doing a soft reset of the infotainment system (holding down the power button), and even updating my phone, but nothing seems to fix it.

Is this a known issue for the 2020 G70? Could it be a software glitch, or something more serious like a faulty head unit? Any suggestions before I book an appointment with the dealer?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Infotainment screen freezing and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto disconnections are common complaints across many modern vehicles, including the 2020 Genesis G70 3.3T Sport. These issues can stem from several electrical and software-related causes.

Potential Causes:

  1. Software Glitch/Bug: The most common cause. A software update from Genesis might be available to address known bugs affecting system stability or smartphone integration.
  2. Loose Connections: A loose or corroded USB cable (for CarPlay/Android Auto) or internal wiring to the head unit can cause intermittent connectivity.
  3. Faulty Head Unit: The infotainment control module itself could be failing, leading to freezing or communication errors.
  4. Overheating: Prolonged use or high ambient temperatures can sometimes cause electronic modules to temporarily malfunction.
  5. Smartphone Compatibility: While less likely if it's a new issue, ensure your phone's OS is updated and try a different, high-quality USB cable.

Diagnostic Steps:

  1. Hard Reset: Disconnect the vehicle's negative battery terminal for 10-15 minutes. This can clear volatile memory and sometimes resolve software glitches. Reconnect and test.
  2. Check for Software Updates: Visit your Genesis dealer or check the Genesis owner's portal online for any available infotainment system software updates. This is often the first step a dealership will take.
  3. Test with a Different Phone/Cable: Rule out your personal device or cable as the source of the CarPlay/Android Auto issue.
  4. Check for OBD Codes: While infotainment issues might not always trigger a 'Check Engine' light, a scan tool might reveal U-codes (e.g., U0140, U0155) indicating communication loss with specific modules on the CAN bus, which could point to the head unit.

When to See a Shop:

If a hard reset or software update doesn't resolve the issue, or if you consistently get communication-related OBD codes, it's time to visit a Genesis dealership. They have specialized diagnostic tools to test the head unit, wiring harness, and other related modules. A faulty head unit often requires replacement, which is best handled by trained technicians.
