Vehicle: 2021 Genesis G70 3.3T Sport

Hey everyone, I've been having a really frustrating issue with my 2021 Genesis G70 3.3T Sport. The infotainment screen frequently freezes up, becoming unresponsive to touch. This often happens when I'm using Apple CarPlay, and it usually leads to CarPlay disconnecting entirely.

I've tried restarting the system by holding down the power button, and I've also swapped out my USB cables multiple times, even trying different iPhones, but the problem keeps coming back. It's really annoying, especially on longer drives when I rely on navigation and music.

Has anyone else experienced this with their G70, and if so, what was the fix? Is this a known software bug or potentially a hardware issue with the head unit?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Infotainment system glitches, including freezing screens and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto disconnects, are not uncommon across various vehicle brands, including Genesis. For your 2021 Genesis G70, this often points to software-related issues or communication problems within the electrical system.

Here are some steps you can take:

  1. Perform a Soft Reset: While you've tried restarting, ensure you're doing a full soft reset. In most Genesis models, this involves pressing and holding the radio power button for about 10-15 seconds until the system reboots. This can clear temporary software glitches.
  2. Check for Software Updates: Genesis frequently releases over-the-air (OTA) updates or updates available through your dealership. Ensure your infotainment system's software is up to date. Outdated software is a common cause of instability.
  3. Inspect USB Ports and Cables: Even if you've swapped cables, ensure the USB port itself is clean and free of debris. Sometimes, a slightly loose connection or a worn port can cause intermittent disconnections. Always use high-quality, MFi-certified (for Apple CarPlay) USB cables.
  4. Test with a Different Phone: While you mentioned trying different iPhones, ensure they are also running the latest iOS version. Sometimes, compatibility issues can arise with specific phone software versions.

Potential Causes:

  • Software Bugs: The most frequent culprit. Updates are designed to fix these.
  • Faulty USB Port/Module: Less common, but a physical defect in the USB port or the associated communication module can cause issues.
  • Infotainment Control Unit (AVN) Malfunction: In rare cases, the entire head unit might be failing.

When to See a Shop:

If the problem persists after trying the above steps, especially after ensuring your software is fully updated, it's time to visit a Genesis dealership. They have specialized diagnostic tools that can communicate directly with the infotainment control unit (AVN) and other related modules. They can check for specific Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) related to your model year and issue, which might indicate a known problem with a specific fix. While standard OBD-II codes might not directly show infotainment issues, the dealer's proprietary diagnostic system can often pull specific error codes from the AVN unit that point to internal faults or communication errors.
