Vehicle: 2020 Genesis G70 3.3T Sport

Hey everyone,

I've been having a really frustrating issue with my 2020 Genesis G70 3.3T Sport. About once a week, when I try to start the car, I get a 'Smart Key Not Detected' message on the dash. It's totally intermittent, sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't.

I've already tried replacing the battery in my main key fob twice, just to be sure. I even tried using my spare key fob, and it also occasionally gives me the same message. Usually, after a few tries of pressing the start button or moving the key around in the cabin, it eventually recognizes it and starts up.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Genesis? Is this a common electrical glitch? I'm worried it might be something more serious than just a key fob battery. Any advice on what I should check or look for before taking it to the dealership would be greatly appreciated!

The 'Smart Key Not Detected' message can certainly be frustrating and indicates an issue within your Genesis G70's smart key and immobilizer system. While a weak key fob battery is the most common culprit, your troubleshooting steps suggest the problem might lie elsewhere.

Here are some steps and potential causes to consider:

  1. Initial Checks & Troubleshooting:

    • Try the second key fob consistently: If the issue occurs with both key fobs, even with new batteries, it points more towards the vehicle's receiving system rather than the key fobs themselves.
    • Key Fob Placement: Ensure the key fob is not obstructed or too far from the central console or the start button area. Some Genesis models have a specific slot (often in the armrest console) where the key can be placed to assist starting if detection is an issue.
    • Check for Interference: Strong electromagnetic fields from other electronic devices (like certain phone chargers, radar detectors, or even nearby radio towers) can sometimes interfere with the key fob's signal.
  2. Potential Causes:

    • Vehicle's Smart Key Antenna/Receiver: Your Genesis has multiple antennas that detect the smart key's presence. One or more of these could be malfunctioning or have a loose connection. These are typically located in the cabin, trunk, and sometimes the exterior door handles.
    • Wiring Issues: Damaged or corroded wiring leading to the smart key antennas or the Body Control Module (BCM) can disrupt communication.
    • Body Control Module (BCM) Malfunction: The BCM is responsible for managing many electrical functions, including the smart key system. A fault within the BCM could cause intermittent detection issues.
    • Immobilizer System Fault: The smart key system is integrated with the immobilizer. A fault here would prevent the car from starting even if the key is detected for door unlocking.
  3. Diagnostics:

    • While you might not see a check engine light, a professional scan tool (like the Genesis Global Diagnostic System - GDS) can often pull specific OBD codes related to the smart key and immobilizer system. Look for codes in the 'B' (Body) or 'U' (Network) categories such as B1A00 (Immobilizer Malfunction), B1A01 (Key ID Not Registered), or B2AAA (Smart Key System Malfunction).
  4. When to See a Shop:

    • Since you've already replaced key fob batteries and tried both keys with no consistent resolution, it's highly recommended to take your 2020 Genesis G70 to a Genesis dealership or a qualified independent shop specializing in advanced automotive electronics. They have the necessary diagnostic tools and expertise to accurately pinpoint whether the issue is with an antenna, wiring, the BCM, or requires key fob reprogramming. Ignoring this issue could lead to your vehicle being unable to start at an inconvenient time.
