Vehicle: 2020 Genesis G70 3.3T Sport

Hey everyone,

I'm having a really frustrating issue with my 2020 Genesis G70 3.3T Sport. For the past few weeks, if I leave it parked for more than 2-3 days, the battery is completely dead. I've had to jump-start it multiple times, and it's getting old fast.

I initially thought it was just the original battery, so I replaced it with a brand new one about a month ago. Unfortunately, the problem persists. It seems like something is draining the battery even when the car is off and locked. I've checked to make sure all lights are off, and nothing is plugged into the charging ports.

Has anyone else experienced a parasitic battery drain with their G70 or other Genesis models? Are there any common culprits I should be looking for before I take it to the dealership? Any advice on how to diagnose this would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer: A persistent battery drain on a newer vehicle like your 2020 Genesis G70 can be incredibly frustrating and points to a parasitic draw issue. This means something is continuously drawing power even when the car is off and locked, exceeding the normal minimal draw.

Common causes for parasitic battery drain in modern vehicles, including Genesis models, often include:

  • Faulty or Stuck Relays: A relay that doesn't fully disengage can keep a circuit active, such as for the fuel pump or a module.
  • Aftermarket Accessories: Improperly installed dash cams, alarm systems, remote starters, or audio equipment can draw constant power if not wired correctly.
  • Infotainment or Navigation Modules: These complex systems can sometimes fail to enter 'sleep' mode, especially after software updates, glitches, or if a component within them is failing.
  • Faulty Alternator Diode: A failing diode in the alternator can allow current to flow back into the alternator, slowly draining the battery.
  • Glove Box or Trunk Lights: Small lights that remain on due to a faulty switch or latch sensor.
  • Door Lock Actuators or Window Modules: A malfunctioning actuator or module can prevent the vehicle's electrical system from fully 'sleeping'.

Here are steps you can take to diagnose the issue:

  1. Check the Battery: Even though it's new, ensure your battery itself isn't faulty. Have it load-tested at an auto parts store to rule out a manufacturing defect or an issue with the battery's ability to hold a charge.
  2. Perform a Parasitic Draw Test:
    • Connect a multimeter in series between the negative battery post and the negative battery cable. Set the multimeter to measure amperage (A or mA).
    • Ensure all doors are closed, lights off, and the car is 'asleep' (this can take 15-30 minutes for modern cars as modules power down). Avoid opening doors or pressing buttons during this time.
    • A normal draw should typically be under 50 milliamps (0.05 amps). If your reading is significantly higher, you have a parasitic draw.
  3. Fuse Pull Method: While monitoring the multimeter, systematically pull one fuse at a time from the fuse box (both under the hood and inside the cabin). When the amperage drops significantly, you've found the circuit responsible for the draw. Consult your owner's manual for fuse diagrams.

When to see a shop: If you're uncomfortable performing these electrical tests, or if you've identified a circuit but can't pinpoint the exact component causing the draw, it's best to take your Genesis to a qualified technician. Dealerships and specialized auto electrical shops have advanced diagnostic tools (like thermal cameras to spot hot spots from active components or advanced scan tools to check module sleep states) and extensive experience with complex vehicle electrical systems. Ignoring a persistent drain can lead to premature battery failure and potential damage to other electrical components over time. Be sure to mention any recent work, software updates, or aftermarket accessories installed, as this can provide valuable clues.
