Transmission Fluid Change on my G70 - Is it really 'lifetime'?

Vehicle: 2020 Genesis G70 3.3T

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2020 Genesis G70 3.3T, and I'm quickly approaching 60,000 miles. I've been diligent with oil changes and other basic maintenance, but I'm starting to think about the transmission fluid. When I asked the dealership, they mentioned it's a 'lifetime' fluid and doesn't need changing unless there's a problem.

I'm a bit skeptical about the 'lifetime' claim, especially since I do a fair bit of highway driving and some spirited driving occasionally. What are your thoughts on this? Should I push to get it changed, or is the dealership correct? If I should change it, what kind of fluid should I be looking for, and is it a DIY-friendly job or strictly a shop thing?

Thanks for any advice!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The concept of 'lifetime' transmission fluid often refers to the expected life of the warranty period or a general service life, not necessarily the entire operational life of the vehicle. For optimal longevity and performance of your 2020 Genesis G70's 8-speed automatic transmission, a fluid change is generally recommended, especially as you approach or exceed 60,000 miles.

  1. Recommended Interval: While Genesis (and many manufacturers using ZF 8HP transmissions) may not list a specific interval for 'normal' driving, severe driving conditions (frequent towing, heavy city traffic, mountainous terrain, or performance driving) often warrant a fluid and filter change between 60,000 to 80,000 miles. For standard driving, many independent shops and transmission specialists suggest considering it around 80,000 to 100,000 miles.
  2. Fluid Type: Your G70 3.3T likely uses a ZF 8HP transmission. It's crucial to use the correct fluid specification. This is typically a ZF LifeguardFluid 8 or an equivalent fluid that meets the ZF TE-ML 11 specification. Using an incorrect fluid can lead to premature wear and transmission issues. Always verify the exact specification for your specific VIN.
  3. DIY vs. Professional: A transmission fluid and filter change on these modern transmissions is generally not a simple DIY job for the average home mechanic. It often requires specific tools, precise temperature monitoring during filling, and a diagnostic scan tool to monitor fluid levels correctly. The transmission pan often integrates the filter, and the pan itself may need replacement. It's highly recommended to have this service performed by a qualified independent shop specializing in European or performance vehicles, or a Genesis dealership.
  4. Why Change It? Over time, transmission fluid degrades, loses its lubricating properties, and can accumulate metallic particles. Fresh fluid helps maintain proper shifting, reduces wear on internal components, and dissipates heat more effectively, extending the life of your transmission.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you notice any unusual shifting (harsh shifts, slipping, delayed engagement).
  • If you detect any leaks around the transmission.
  • If you experience any warning lights related to the powertrain or transmission on your dashboard. These could indicate more serious issues beyond just fluid degradation.
