Vehicle: 2020 Genesis G80 3.8

Hey everyone, I've got a 2020 Genesis G80 3.8 and I've started noticing a distinct clunking noise coming from the front suspension, especially when going over speed bumps or uneven pavement. It's not constant, but it's definitely there and getting more frequent. The noise seems to be more prominent on the driver's side.

I've tried bouncing the car a bit when parked, but I can't replicate it easily. It really needs the suspension to articulate over an obstacle. The car drives fine otherwise, no pulling or major steering issues, but the sound is concerning.

Has anyone else experienced this with their G80? What should I be looking for? Any common culprits for this model year?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking noise from the front suspension, especially over bumps, is a common complaint and can stem from several issues. Given your 2020 Genesis G80 3.8, here are the most likely causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Sway Bar End Links: These are a very common source of clunking noises. The bushings or ball joints in the end links can wear out, causing play and noise. They connect the sway bar to the control arm or strut.
  2. Control Arm Bushings: The front lower and upper control arms have rubber bushings that can degrade over time, leading to metal-on-metal contact or excessive movement, resulting in a clunk.
  3. Strut Mounts/Bearings: The top mount of the strut, which attaches it to the vehicle's chassis, can wear out. The bearing within the mount allows the strut to rotate with steering, and if it fails, it can cause clunking or popping noises, especially when turning or going over bumps.
  4. Ball Joints: While less common on newer vehicles, worn lower or upper ball joints can also cause clunking. These connect the steering knuckle to the control arms.
  5. Loose Components: Occasionally, a bolt on a suspension component (like a strut bolt or control arm bolt) can loosen, leading to play and noise.

When to See a Shop:

It's recommended to have your Genesis G80 inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible. While a clunking noise might seem minor, it often indicates wear in critical suspension components. Ignoring these issues can lead to:

  • Accelerated wear on other suspension or steering parts.
  • Compromised handling and stability, especially at higher speeds or during emergency maneuvers.
  • Potential safety risks if a component fails completely.

A professional can safely lift the vehicle, inspect all suspension components for play, wear, or damage, and accurately diagnose the source of the noise. They can also check for any related diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) if your vehicle has an adaptive suspension system, though a mechanical clunk is less likely to trigger a generic OBD-II code.
