Vehicle: 2021 Genesis G80 3.5T

Hey everyone,

I'm reaching out to see if anyone else with a 2021 Genesis G80 3.5T has been experiencing issues with their infotainment system. Lately, it's been freezing up quite a bit, becoming unresponsive to touch, and sometimes just completely restarting itself.

The bigger headache, though, is with Apple CarPlay. It constantly disconnects, sometimes multiple times during a short drive. I've tried different cables, including the original Apple one, and it doesn't seem to make a difference. My phone is updated to the latest iOS.

Is this a known issue for the 2021 G80? Are there any TSBs or recalls related to the infotainment system that I should be aware of before I take it into the dealership? Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer: It sounds like you're experiencing a common frustration with modern vehicle infotainment systems, particularly with Apple CarPlay integration. While the Genesis G80 offers a premium experience, software glitches can unfortunately occur.

Here are some steps and considerations:

  1. Soft Reset the Infotainment System: Many Genesis models allow for a soft reset of the infotainment system. This is often done by pressing and holding the power button for the radio for about 10-15 seconds until the system reboots. This can resolve temporary software hiccups.
  2. Check USB Cables and Ports: Ensure you are using a high-quality, MFi-certified (for Apple CarPlay) USB cable. Cheap or damaged cables are a frequent cause of intermittent connectivity. Try a different cable and inspect the USB port in your G80 for any debris or damage.
  3. Update Phone Software: Make sure your iPhone's iOS is fully updated. Sometimes, compatibility issues arise between older phone software and the car's infotainment system.
  4. Check for Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs): Genesis, like other manufacturers, often releases TSBs to address known software bugs or minor hardware issues. Your dealership can check if there are any relevant TSBs for your 2021 G80's infotainment system that might require a software update. These updates are typically performed by the service department.
  5. Infotainment System Firmware Update: Beyond TSBs, the entire infotainment system firmware might need an update. These updates often improve stability, add features, and fix bugs. This is usually a dealership-only procedure.

When to See a Shop: If the issues persist after trying the soft reset, checking cables, and updating your phone, it's definitely time to schedule an appointment with your Genesis dealership. They have specialized diagnostic tools to:

  • Identify specific software versions and apply necessary updates.
  • Diagnose potential hardware failures within the head unit or USB module.
  • Check for any underlying communication errors within the vehicle's network that might be affecting the infotainment system.

While there aren't specific OBD-II codes for infotainment freezing, a dealership scan can reveal network communication faults (e.g., U-codes) that might indirectly point to the issue. Addressing these problems early can prevent further frustration and ensure your premium driving experience remains intact.
